Yet another spring-like day here. Walked the dog in a t-shirt and sweatshirt at lunchtime and ended up sweating in the warm sun.
I have no doubt the max. temperature was marginally below the 30-year mean, and I'm actually shivering through a cold spell, but with no frost this morning and bright sunshine it's difficult to feel that way.
This is why I lose patience with those who claim to prefer mild weather who then cheer at the prospect of a winter filled with 11C westerlies. Because of the dampness those conditions are way colder than a dry 5C under a clear sky. It's dampness which causes us to feel cold, not the air temperature, as it conducts heat from our bodies. It's the reason we shiver in wet clothes.
Here's Jan. 2013, the only snow here since Dec. 2010:
Pathetic. Not a hint of even that in this supposed cold spell, bar a dusting over one or two fields on the top of the Quantocks one morning.
Now here's a real cold spell. Sunrise at winter solstice 2010 at the foot of the Blackdowns, 5 miles south of Taunton:
I love that photo with that eerie, magical blue light that defined that epic period around the shortest day.
