Let's face it with next weekend and beyond nailed on with a return of Atlantic driven mild westerlies surely it will take a miracle to see any proper lengthy cold spells for us southerners this winter for February? This winter has been totally uninspiring so far . We need proper easterlies and this is just not going to happen anytime soon if at all for the weeks ahead ....

Caz, I'm holding you personally responsible for this cool snap not developing into anything meaningful, with all your wishing/praying for no snow on the 21st/22nd.

I hope you spill your pina colada down your favourite bikini

My daughter is no better at putting my mind at rest.  She phoned me this morning and pointed out that snow is forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Sigh. I just want to see the sun at this end as it has been a real grey drab day all day. Yes, to be fair, it has been forecast for the most part but if this is going to be as the norm during the winter season then I might as well throw the towel in and just say that I get to have just the two seasons with Spring and Autumn.
Indeed, it is true that the UK, never mind Kent, isn't particularly well known for snowfalls and prolonged cold - nor for long hot summers, what with having the Atlantic as a next door neighbour and with our prevailing wind always coming in from the south west - but why does it have to be always so dull and damp?! Yes, we did have a nice drop of sunshine yesterday morning but all that gave way to thick grey cloud and rain by the afternoon, this climate is just so . . . as the kids like to say it . . . "mingin'".

Oh no, I'm really am starting to sound like Richardabdn!

normal service to be resumed as from next weekend,i personally can`t see any chance of easterly winds at all this winter and it could be many many years before we see another cluster of cold winters again.

imby today is only the 2nd day this month the temp has failed to reach double figures.

Today is a real shock to the system

Still, only another 4-5 weeks and will start to feel the warmth of the sun again on clear days

I just saw the BBC weather for the week ahead by Nick Miller - Looks like another downgrade yet again.

This cold spell is turning out a disaster in terms of the snow - we have had no snow here in Exeter only one night of frost and throughout this week despite the forecasters keep saying potential for snow or now is "Just the risk" the rain will turn to snow. OK so temperatures of 8c Tuesday, 7c Weds, 8c Thursday and 10c Friday for the south west!? What's cold about that? WHAT? That's seasonal.

I can't see much in the way of snow for Scotland either so snow for the south is out of the question. - This is going from bad to worse and getting more frustrating. All we ask for is a snow shower or a flurry. Even if it didn't settle. I can't believe how difficult this is. I don't think London will see snow either.

I'll rate this cold spell 1/10. - December 2014 ON 29th it was colder at -5c in Exeter. During this cold spell so far we have struggled to get to freezing let alone below, but even tonight isn't forecasted to be cold.
BBC forecasted -14c was for most of rural Scotland and inland area's but most recently I heard them say temperatures could get down to -10c. NOTE the word "could." Presenters always use the word "Possibility or potential" - Hope they can get more confident.

We were due to have a high of 5c today but the temperature hit 8.3c and in the light winds and sun it felt spring-like.

I don't want to sound a pessimist but this has been a bad cold spell in terms of snowfall totals and low temperatures so far?

We had a bit of light rain that turned to light snow, the first since Boxing Day and it's given us a dusting but I think it's about done for now.  My nails are seriously at risk of being bitten.

Yet another spring-like day here. Walked the dog in a t-shirt and sweatshirt at lunchtime and ended up sweating in the warm sun.

I have no doubt the max. temperature was marginally below the 30-year mean, and I'm actually shivering through a cold spell, but with no frost this morning and bright sunshine it's difficult to feel that way.

This is why I lose patience with those who claim to prefer mild weather who then cheer at the prospect of a winter filled with 11C westerlies. Because of the dampness those conditions are way colder than a dry 5C under a clear sky. It's dampness which causes us to feel cold, not the air temperature, as it conducts heat from our bodies. It's the reason we shiver in wet clothes.

Here's Jan. 2013, the only snow here since Dec. 2010:

Pathetic. Not a hint of even that in this supposed cold spell, bar a dusting over one or two fields on the top of the Quantocks one morning.

Now here's a real cold spell. Sunrise at winter solstice 2010 at the foot of the Blackdowns, 5 miles south of Taunton:

I love that photo with that eerie, magical blue light that defined that epic period around the shortest day.

Well, two or three times a decade it does, anyway.

Tally no we haven't seen any snow either!

Latest BBC outlook - +5 today, +5 tomorrow then rain overnight leaving a cloudy and +5 day Weds. Pretty much what I was expecting from the 'clutter clusters' and means of the last few days output.

Now call me old fashioned, but that ain't any cold spell. A 'less than average spell' yes, but cold in the true sense of the word (where you actually feel the cold and maybe get some wintry ppn) it definitely is not.

Yes. It's the bombardment of reminders on here and in the media that I should be grateful for experiencing my first proper cold spell for nearly a couple of years which are so baffling and irritating.

If I were unaware of all that hype, then I'd have simply got on with enjoying the occasional warmth and early spring sunshine of the past week.

Well the cold spell that never was looks to be on its way out come the weekend and we end up with our default weather pattern fro this winter, alternatingTM and PM air. The clock is ticking and for all the waxing lyrical post about favourable teleconnections as we move forward into another month, the simple facts are the weather is having none of it and some othe factor is overriding all these alleged cold signals IMO.

Well its still pants for all of us snow lovers down here in the south, perhaps a few have seen some white stuff but I haven't. Just goes to show how frustrating our weather can be, one minute there is a slight chance we mite see something then with a blink of the eye its gone.

The clock is slowly ticking, maybe feb will bring something or even march,as this week looks like becoming milder towards the end of the week or just after or maybe, possibly the models will change again.

Don't give me March! March 2013 was as cold as it ever could be and not a hint of snow. Just a miserable, grey, windy chill for days on end.

With all this gorgeous sunshine my pepper plants are loving it, the late January sunshine really is pleasant as it's heats up the conservatory into the low 20's...

Shame still no snow though!
