Lost the old topic to the old forum. Use this thread to discuss the up-coming world cup, whether it be one of the many home nations involved LOL or just the competition in general.

You're a naughty one you are. I'm expecting a bite soon enough.

With Tevez and Messi being in such form, will it matter if the rest of the team are a bit 'village'??? I'm thinking they might just be able to do it you know. The only thing that will hold them back is the manager, but the further they go in the competition the more he will be able to rouse them without any tactical knowhow, a bit like Keegan with 'the Skunks'

Don't forget players like Mascherano, Aimar, Demichellis, Aguero, Higuain. They have the players, it's just that their manager is an imbecile.

Prior ro christmas i would have said England would have done very well.... now i do feel quite down beat about our chances. Some players lack form, carrying injuries etc. I would never right off the Germans in a major tournament and i do suspect the Dutch may do rather well. Spain are my favourites and i do see a European team winning the WC but no doubt Argentina and Brazil will prove stern tests and again you cant right either of these teams off.

It will be good to see the World Cup back in South America for the 2014 contest after 28 years. So much better for being able to watch all the games when you work during the day.

Yes maybe Village was a little unfair, but you get my point, there have been many examples in the past where a team has 9 good players and only 2 outstanding players that have gone on to win the cup. Lets hope it's England's turn, although we only have one in the outstanding bracket

Spain will win it. Argentine out in the quarters, maybe semis. Maradona is a joke.

I wouldn't bet against Spain - but don't think they're the shoe-in that many are saying. The Dutch have a chance, and will be sure to get good support from the Afrikaners.

The last World Cup tournament played in South America was Argentina '78, so 36 years will have passed since then by the time we reach the 2014 tournament.

My one hope for this year's World Cup is that there isn't too much indiscipline and red cards. Every World Cup since 1990 has had at least 15 players sent off and this is in stark contrast to most World Cups up to and including 1986. The final total of 28 red cards in Germany in 2006 was the highest ever for a single tournament and was 6 more than the previous highest of 22 at France '98.

I should have said Latin America - I'm sure Mexico is part of that.

I wonder if the 30 mark will be breeched for the first time in this World cup. Perhaps the rise in red cards is a conseqence of the game being played at a faster pace than years gone by, plus the inability to be able to legally tackle these days depending on the ref.

More this reason, to be honest. I still enjoy the game, but the rule changes that have ruined the art of defending and tackling has taken a big chunk of the game away. And yet there's more injuries than ever....

I wouldn't last five minutes in a match with current rules. My mentality was to aim to take the ball and the man, because that was what was taught to me, and makes the most sense. If you miss the ball, it's a free kick and maybe a booking, but these days, you can't even do ball'n'all tackles.

They'd cream anyone if they had a good coach, IMO.

As they don't, I'd go for Spain or Holland. England out in the semis.

Good point Saint. I just wonder how long the likes of Claudio Gentile from Italy's 1982 winning team would have lasted in a match under today's rules!

I'm going for the teutonic efficiency of the Germans to prevail .

They are consistently overlooked and under-rated, but always achieve far more as a team than their individual merits might suggest. With a nucleus of experienced but still relatively young players, they'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I really have major concerns over some of Englands stars on the run up to the World cup:

Ferdinand - Injury prone season and has looked slow below par when played

Terry - Personal issues, no pace and below par

Gerrard - Very poor season

A Cole - personal issues and just coming back after lengthy injury

Carrick - Total loss of form of recent

Lennon - Missed most of the season with injuries

Wallcott - See Lennon

Rooney - Great season but is now sufferring with niggling injuries

Goalkeepers - Do we have one...???

Rooney was destined to be injured at this point in the season,Man U have played him to death.

Wallcott/Lennon forget injuries, would either of them started???

Carrick he isnt a first choice

A Cole been out a while but will be fresh Issues with his missus wont bother him

Gerrad yes a poor season, but not helped by having to carry the whole of Liverpool

Terry, for me is the biggest concern he has continuously been poor

Ferdinand, reports this morning say he is returning to fitness......in time for the WC ????

In saying all this as long as players are injury free the quality will come out, it will be a fresh challenge for many
