So the JFF model predicted 1303 cases today and we actually saw 665.

So perhaps expect an overshoot tommorow? 2000+ rather than the expected 1480.

What do you make of today's reduction in UK deaths?

So nothing to make of today's reduction in UK deaths, unless it is sustained.

Italy on the other hand, appears to be finally turning the corner, but at what cost? Italy won't have an economy worth the name after this for a long time.

There certainly won't be an early uptick in tourist numbers, even once Italy has the situation finally under control. Same goes for Spain and for France.

Can I ask why the testing numbers aren't consistent ?

Did the 18 year old casualty have any other health problems? I assume so otherwise this would have been bigger news surely. Not that it makes this any less sad, of course.

I don't know what to make of the up and downs of cases and deaths , so confusing for all . I have just had a message from a mate saying " we are on top of this now , we should see a daily drop "

Cases reported on Mar 14th 342 , then they dropped on 15th 251 and dropped again on 16th 152 ……...so a job to understand it all

I do not think a one day death rate reduction means much ,especially as it is Sunday. As for more being shut down many will think ,look at Italy , it is not helping there yet.nor Spain . Is a virus not airborne so a 2 metre gap and washing hands might help but not stop it spreading.

Italy, Spain, France still not seeing any really dramatic benefits of their measures in the death count.

There's huge uncertainty about the incubation period  (time from exposure to the development of symptoms).

I think we should have shut down even more by now. Although if the death rate has peaked then the government and advisers will be able to say they've handled this quite well.

I think the only numbers that matter are death rates.  Even then it’s hard to glean anything of real statistical value, as we don’t know what ‘underlying problems’ means.  We don’t know how many of those were at ‘end of life’ and even if other countries are using the same criteria.

An odd day.

We visited my parents - but went round the side into the back garden and stayed about 15ft away, whilst they sat on the patio. Kept conversation light, and the dog made a big fuss of them.

Then went on to a quiet canal path for a long walk with the dog. It was nearly 5pm so even quieter than I presume it had been eearlier. Encountered two groups walking towards us, both times gave each other wide berths with a smile and a 'hello'.

Status of COVID-19

As of 19 March 2020, COVID-19 is no longer considered to be a high consequence infectious diseases (HCID) in the UK.

Quote

The 4 nations public health HCID group made an interim recommendation in January 2020 to classify COVID-19 as an HCID. This was based on consideration of the UK HCID criteria about the virus and the disease with information available during the early stages of the outbreak. Now that more is known about COVID-19, the public health bodies in the UK have reviewed the most up to date information about COVID-19 against the UK HCID criteria. They have determined that several features have now changed; in particular, more information is available about mortality rates (low overall), and there is now greater clinical awareness and a specific and sensitive laboratory test, the availability of which continues to increase.

The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) is also of the opinion that COVID-19 should no longer be classified as an HCID.

The need to have a national, coordinated response remains, but this is being met by the government’s COVID-19 response.

Cases of COVID-19 are no longer managed by HCID treatment centres only. All healthcare workers managing possible and confirmed cases should follow the updated national infection and prevention (IPC) guidance for COVID-19, which supersedes all previous IPC guidance for COVID-19. This guidance includes instructions about different personal protective equipment (PPE) ensembles that are appropriate for different clinical scenarios.

Can someone attempt to answer the question as to why hotels were not ordered to close on Friday along with pubs, restaurants etc??

I work in the sector and am baffled by it as you can walk into most hotels as a non resident and eat in the restaurant and drink at the bar.

This is all hypothetical of course, but why take such a risk?

Both the govt and some people still don't get it.

But the average figure is 3 people not 10, if that's the part to which you are referring?

10 would put it up with Measles and twice as contagious as Mumps & Rubella and 5x to 10x seasonal influenza.
