I watched that - and at the time everyone thought it was a bit over the top. Frightens me to death when I think we're about to get a taste of it.

Are we likely to see some much needed rain when this heat starts to break on Wednesday? Not that worried about storms but would like to see a few good downpours even if it's warm rain 🙂

This has been debated and discounted for years. Next.

I wonder whether or not, any possible records will end up getting discounted because of a car driving by nearby close to the actual weather station as what happened in Motherwell (a small town in Lanarkshire, here in Scotland) back in 2019.

Of course, the summer of 2018 was a really good summer overall, but didn't actually break any records (at least that I know of) in terms of the temperature. That was one of those decent summers as well which was completely unexpected because of the fact that it came so soon after the Beast from the East event which happened in February/March of that same year.

In complete contrast to that, the summer of 2019 was actually a very poor summer here overall. That was a very wet summer with very little in the way of hot weather, although it still managed to provide us with that one huge heat spike which gave us which up until now, is still our hottest day on record as it currently stands (that might of course, no longer be the case from Tuesday onwards if the latest forecasts are correct).

Those are both completely different summers but one thing which they both have in common is that they both had at least one hot spell within them. This means that it can actually be very easy to get confused between those two years and because it was in the 2019 that the current record was actually set (and not 2018), that is the one which I am automatically going to be thinking of, despite the fact that the previous summer of 2018 was by far, the better summer overall.

This year, we really have a bit of both here because it has been a really good summer overall (the second of two back to decent summers (last summer was really good well, but without any big temperature extremes) which hasn't actually happened here since the summers of 2013 and 2014) and it is also a summer which could possibly be about to give us hottest day on record once again. Given that this has been a much better summer overall than the summer of 2019, that is bound to also magnify the overall effects of this upcoming spike as a result, compared to what we saw in 2019, those making those prospects even more scary.

Some of the comments on Facebook are infuriating, especially from the older generation. It's the same attitude as with everything else... this "well we did it in the 70s so you can all do it now" attitude. Someone said "the BBC keep saying it's unprecedented but I remember 76 too when people died from the extreme heat"... as if this somehow makes it ok. Ignoring the fact that the reason it is unprecedented is the potential temperature, shouldn't these people be glad if they have lived through similar that warnings now reach more people which could save lives? Then there's the "IT'S CALLED SUMMER" comments. I don't know whether people are stupid, ignorant, naive or what. I'm trying no to get involved because I'd be outnumbered.

The summer of 1989 seemed longer, but it definitely wasn’t hotter than the past decade.*

*Disclaimer I was 16 in 1989 & most memories may have been coloured by adult beverages consumed in a field awaiting exam results.

My dear old Mum has been oscillating from “It won’t be too bad, the summer of 76 we coped just fine!’ to ‘I expect I’ll just die next week.’

One doesn’t have to look far to see why vodka featured heavily whilst I was lounging in the hay in 1989.

In a selfish kind of way, if such a heatwave have to occur I'm glad it is on a Monday and Tuesday and not during the weekend when pubs and nightclubs are more likely to be used with excessive drinking causing common sense to go right out the window. That said, this weekend will still be warm enough to cause the usual antisocial problems anyway.

Back to the models (12z GFS) - Monday is looking safe for the record and 40c.

Tuesday 'Extreme heat' potential looks to be under threat by a more progressive cold front that could cut off the heat supply for many in the heat zone by 4pm.

30C is the record for here, 32.5C for NE Scotland.

The fact that 32.2C was reached at Fochabers in September 1906 and 28.9C at Aberdeen in early June 1939 would suggest scope for the records above to be exceeded.

It would surely imply that 33/34C should be possible inland and 31C/32C by the coast at the height of summer when temperatures are on average 2-3C higher than early June/September.

However I'm not seeing anything to indicate that the current records will be approached or challenged. Yet again it seems that Scotland and Ireland will struggle to match temperatures that were reached in the 19th Century. Some of the model output I've seen show below average temperatures here for Monday and a whopping 22C on Tuesday. Some heatwave

Highest I've seen for here is 26C which is in no way exceptional and just the normal value for the hottest day of the year and always has been. If 28C is not reached here then that will equal the longest run without reaching that threshold (16 years from 1959-74).

Unless August can manage but based on the pitiful lack of heat in the month over the past 25 years I think that can be ruled out. Not reached 27C in August since 1997 despite it being achieved in two consecutive Augusts in the 1880s when the weather station was located much closer to the coast
