Yes I just came here to post about this. They were very noticeable low down to the west when I went to put the bins out earlier on.

BBC reporting that the Northern Lights were visible last night as far south as Somerset. Did anyone see them?

I noticed last night, late on, how clear it was with a superb display of Orion even in a streetlit city centre, but my aspect is southwards, and didn't think to look the other way.

Cheers Roger, as always. 👍

Planning to see it this evening/tonight, IF the clouds clear, as I've missed it last night.

Currently extremely miserable, cloudy, and showery in Sheffield. 😡

Anyway, now receiving red alert on AuroraWatch, so those living in suitable areas, keep an eye out!!

I have to say, the UK weather really is a nightmare for astronomy. We've missed any chance to see the aurora over the weekend, and now we've missed this conjunction. It's almost as if the weather gods know there's something going on. What's even more frustrating is that next week, when the winds turn more northerly, you can guarantee we will get a run of completely clear, cloudless nights then.

Younger TWO readers might want to know about 2023 DW! 🙄

"A newly detected asteroid has a very small chance of impacting the Earth in 2046, Nasa tweeted on Tuesday. If it does hit, the asteroid, roughly the size of an Olympic swimming pool, may arrive on Valentine's Day 2046 according to Nasa calculations... If it does collide with us, 2023 DW would not have the same doomsday effect as the asteroid that decimated the Earth's dinosaurs 66 million years ago. That asteroid was far bigger at 7.5 miles (12km) wide, Scientific American says."

Sky and Telescope says:  This Week's Planet Roundup
"Don't be misled by media hype about a great lineup of planets shining in the west this week. Most people will only see Venus and, high above it, much-fainter Mars similar to stars in its general area. Mercury and Jupiter are very low in bright twilight and will likely need binoculars before they set. Uranus, near Venus, is invisible to the naked eye. "

Be happy with spotting Venus!

Aurora forecasts at https://www.metcheck.com/WEATHER/aurora_forecasts.asp

The KP index shown there translates as 5 - seen in N Scotland; 7 - seen in N England; 9 - seen in S England. It looks as if us southerners have missed our chance this year. Maybe Scots will be able to see it later this week.

Aliens? Has anyone been following this Independent story, 3rd April - not 1st! If so, your thoughts please...
"...until now researchers have struggled to confirm whether distant rocky planets have magnetic fields of their own, and therefore have found it difficult to say how likely a planet might be to able to support life. Now the new candidate – YZ Ceti b, a rocky planet that orbits a star about 12 light years away – has sent a repeating radio signal that comes from the star and seems to be affected by the planet."

AN EARTH-DIRECTED EXPLOSION ON THE SUN [spaceweather]
Yesterday (April 21st), a large magnetic filament snaking across the sun's southern hemisphere exploded, hurling a CME straight toward our planet. Estimated time of arrival: April 24th. Minor to strong geomagnetic storms are possible when the CME strikes.
