Incredibly cold in Moscow - Surely locals would feel it? Never got above -26c today in Moscow and same for Saint Petersburg:

https://www.accuweather.com/en/ru/moscow/294021/weather-forecast/294021

Temperatures are some 15 to 20c below seasonal January average for them - not a record breaker for cold but it's never been so cold over recent years and the fact that the cold has been on going for weeks or even over a month now is just remarkable...really is!!! When will it head our way?

Also look at Oslo - temperatures not set to rise above -20c by day on 5th:

- Just remarkable and yet the CFS and all long range models never went for such prolonged cold weather For Russia and Scandinavia - including Baltic regions. I remember C FS was for Russian and Scandinavia to be 1-2c above norm for December and near Norm for January but it's been well below norm for almost 1 month! -

Imagine an easterly now for the UK?? 😋

The heavy snow over northern Denmark, southern Sweden and southern Norway came courtesy of Storm Henk which stalled over Denmark and drew strong cold easterlies around its northern flank. This was along with copious precipitation no doubt enhanced by travel over the Baltic sea and North sea.

BBC last night showing a major plunge of cold/freezing air on a broad front reaching as far south as the fringes of the Gulf of Mexico. This morning's Accuweather expecting it to disappear as fast as it came, before the temp drops back to an average value. Since it's the contrast between this plunge and warmer air to the south that's firing up the jet stream, we may be spared more major storms.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/dangerous-ice-storm-snow-to-lead-warmup-in-midwest-and-northeast/1615012

From the link, selected, temps last Sun and next Thu, Washington DC 34F >62F, Burlington VT 18F > 41F, Raleigh NC 42F > 71F.

It also says that ice coverage on the Great Lakes is well below norm (14%, usually 25%).
