Well tomorrow looks like the first real potential for decent storms in the South / South East. Decent CAPE/LI for a time tomorrow from midnight onwards. Decent gusty winds and some large hail possible.

Yes the french seem particularly worried by this event.

Yes, local Met. Office broadcasts have mentioned this. I think at present due to slide up past my East over the Cotentin peninsular.

Even the convective ‘biased’ models are struggling a bit with tonight, with a broad range of trajectory and severity on show.
Let’s see what the 12Zs offer, but in chasing parlance I’d be sitting it out with a steak and code somewhere within 100 miles of the potential solutions.

In the midst of all this, it wasn't surprising to experience just how humid it was when I was out for a walk this morning.

Looks as if most of the action will be over Dorset moving NW into Somerset, but I might get woken up about 2am by an extension to the main area. Also a line of downpours from Newbury to the Thames Estuary developing at about that time and persisting as it drifts slowly N-wards.

Small unexpected isolated thundery showers heading towards N of Aberdeen from the N Sea.

Normally it happens when cold Am or in Winter Pc airmass passes over the N Sea, but the airmass is originating from warm Europe. Must be elevated storms.

Loads of strikes over northern France coming NW across the channel you lucky southerners! Cold Haar is as exciting as it gets up here

The radar returns are showing pockets with intensity of around 4-6 in per hour (100-150mm) approaching the south coast. There’s another cluster drifting east towards Essex, developing into quite a significant area of heavy rain.

First (distant) flash of lightning. Too far away to hear thunder

An almost constant rumble heard from here with a couple of close ones too.

Just heard a nice rumble of thunder whilst watching the TV.

Now some powerful lightning with over head thunder. Only a few every 4-5 minutes but with spectacular lightning.

Looking like the main core of torrential rain is still out east.

Two rumbles of thunder last night, a few heavy dobs of rain but not even enough to tip the guage - thoroughly unexciting. Looking at the radar though it seems plenty of people in the SE will be rubbing their bleary eyes this morning! 😁

11C cloudy with rain moving away in a fresh westerly breeze.
I left the bedroom curtains open last night and a window, just in case of a light and sound show.
Nothing.
Only moderate or heavy rain.

Frequent lightning and thunder for a while around 01:00, not much rain.  Second storm soon after 03:00, very frequent lightning and thunder with torrential rain with hail but moved through fairly quickly.  10.8mm in total.

Had some constant lightning and loud thunder not directly overhead and in the mix was what sounded like some large hail - new growth on some trees knocked off as evidence. Would say almost a very good storm not quite overhead.

Here's the radar for 3:15 this morning, when some storms passed close by here (but it stayed dry).

I don't think I've ever seen such an extensive amount of "off the scale" rainfall before!

BBC Radio Sussex quoting Meto as recording 35,000 lightning strikes last night, mostly over the Channel. I don't know if they included lightning over France in this total?

One strike hit a Hall of Residence in the University of Chichester and another a care home near Bognor with severe roof damage. No personal injuries or fire reported.

Apparently one ingredient in triggering the storms was 28C temp in the Paris region yesterday

Folkestone Shield was effective last night where there hadn’t been a single drop, did get to see some distance lightning in the horizon all around me but overall it has been an uneventful night. 😁
