An incredible storm over West Yorkshire this afternoon! From what I've seen on social media, much of Leeds and Bradford are experiencing flash flooding. Remarkable and scary.

Bradford 17.0 mm and Astwood (Worcs) 14mm from the two storms noted on here yesterday, though this says nothing about the rate of rainfall, and the centre of the storm may have missed the recording station.

Meanwhile Charlwood (Surrey) recorded 30.4 mm - do we have any local observations for there? There was a warning out for southern counties as well as the Pennines but 50 miles from Charlwood, in Chichester, it didn't feel in the least thundery.

PWS around here are in the 60-70mm range for yesterday. Most of that in the first 45 minutes!  Highly variable of course.
This here in the 60-70mm zone.

MetO Thunderstorm warnings covering quite large areas for today

No doubt TORRID will be wetting themselves into a flurry of tornado warnings

I can not believe we've missed out yet again here, we are, or was, well in on the yellow warning area, but everything kicked off north of us as it always seems to do, so damned disappointing. Years ago we'd be hammered every summer with thunderstorms but everything is always further north nowadays, I'm beginning to think this flippin planet has tilted a bit, sorry rant over.

I've just had a thunderstorm here. It wasn't as potent as the one that has just moved over Manchester and Rossendale, but there was still a good few flashes and rumbles.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

And yet, most of it died out during the night leaving only sporadic, mostly light rain, chiefly in the far north. Other areas (esp further south) had some clear spells. Some of these widespread thunderstorms would keep on going all night, peaking at midnight.

I suspect these storms where formed by direct surface convection (i.e, Cb from Cu con clouds), convecting violently when it reached medium level heights where patchy Ac cas clouds would have occurred, but have not maintained significant instability at this height in the night.

In Lowestoft, I have seen Cb clouds developing straight from Ac cas in the last 30 years, whilst the lower layers were very stable; some of these became spectacular nighttime thunderstorms.

Some heavy thundery showers around Shetland Islands a little earlier today. Of course, there's no radar coverage of the Shetlands on the Met Office site.

An unexpected lively shower passing over just now - peaked at 36mm/hour rainfall rate. Neither GFS nor MetO foresaw that one, with the latter saying "Cloudier in the east, especially along the Kent coast, with perhaps the odd spot of light rain."

It's proper convective rain too, the sort that has massive raindrops which make large wet circles when they land...

Dull, forboding look over Sheffield at the moment with yellowish skies and strongly convective clouds, i.e, Cu con clouds (and relatively high cloud bases of over 1000 m). Would not be surprised to get a thunderstorm in the next few hours.

I'm on the edge of a thunderstorm not far from Ringstead Bay in Dorset. Waiting in car park as it will be too risky on the beach. It formed quite fast before I set out.
