My guess proved correct as they will close the roof of the Rogers Centre today for the game against the Mariners. First time in its 23 year history it will be closed for heat: http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110720&content_id=22070118&notebook_id=22072094&vkey=notebook_tor&c_id=tor

Let's see what today brings then in terms of temperatures in Southern Ontario. EC, along with TWN now predicting 38c again for Toronto Pearson. It's currently 27c at 6am at Pearson. Another place to watch is Windsor, right down in extreme SW Ontario (across from Detroit) - forecast high is 39c there.

Looks like it will definitely be classified as a heatwave (in Canada this is 3 or more days with highs of 32c or more). Real concerns about power supply: http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1028033--soaring-temperatures-to-test-city-s-power-supply?bn=1

Hi folks, it's here! Some weather day this, i'm guessing this is how it feels in the tropics or Far East most days? Just incredibly warm, quite difficult even for fit and able people to breath, so who knows how others with medical conditions will cope. Must have drank a gallon of water already today. As for the Jays Graeme, amazing that this is the first time in 23yrs for the roof, but this is an amazing extrordinary day and EC reflect this with a State-wide Weather Warning for extreme heat and humidex :

WEATHER WARNING

CITY OF HAMILTON
Extreme temperatures and humidex values expected today.

The humid tropical air mass has arrived as expected. The strong July sun will quickly cause the mercury to soar well into the middle and upper thirties this afternoon. Combining the record setting temperatures with the high humidity in this sultry tropical air mass will result in oppressive humidex values in the low to mid forties across all of Southern Ontario by this afternoon.

There will be some local relief from the high humidex values immediately along the shorelines of the Great Lakes and large inland lakes.

Current indications suggest that a weak front will slip through tonight. However in the wake of the front it will continue to be hot on Friday with temperatures in the low to mid thirties but somewhat less humid. Well above normal temperature will continue into the weekend for most of Southern Ontario with temperatures reaching the low thirties again on Saturday. It will be the combination of the duration of the high heat along with warm overnight conditions which makes this heat event particularly significant.

During times of high heat and humidity, it is critical to stay properly hydrated by drinking Plenty of fluid like water or juice. Strenuous outdoor activities should be scheduled during the early morning or evening hours. Wear loose fitting, light weight clothing and spend as much time as possible in air conditioned places. Stay out of the sun and never leave elderly, children or pets unattended in a car.

Refer to your local public forecast for further details.

Hopefully the power will remain on Graeme, i'm hoping that T.O. has learnt the lessons from the 2003 NorthEast power outage that also affected NYC, Boston & Montreal. Obviously with a/c on full bore in most locations the strain on the grid is big.

Here's some current temps across Southern Ontario at 2pm EDT :

Windsor                36c         (Humidex 49)

Sarnia                   35c         (Humidex 47)

London                 34c          (Humidex 45)

Hamilton               34c          (Humidex 47)

Toronto                 37c          (Humidex 48)

Peterborough         34c          (Humidex 45)

EC still predicting 38c for T.O. and 37c for Hamilton later this afternoon. Record breaking values for the date surely and in some places record breaking overall. Certainly never seen Humidex levels so high around here before and that is with little sun around as it's gone very hazy outside.

Will try and post tomorrow with final confirmed highs and what happened with power etc! Looking more and more unsettled for Sunday now especially further North of Toronto.

Phew

Very quick post as I am at work. Just been for a walk round the block in downtown TO. Wow! It is just roasting out there. The tall buildings are funnelling a really hot wind down the streets, it's like standing in front of a hairdryer.

The street level thermometer at the corner of University Ave and Adelaide St. has hit the magic 100F - in fact it is recording 101F . It can be a bit optimistic in summer in my experience, so we'll see if the official temps hit that level.

Certainly easily the hottest I've seen it since I arrived though, and up there with some of the snowstorms for a memorable weather event.

Currently 38C in Toronto at 5pm and 27C last night, Oak Lawn also reached 38C and now 36.8C and last night was 28C.   I wish here does the same with temps up to 35C which should be right after having prolonged hot weather in April.

Results for Toronto was 37.9C and 26C at night, can you imagined that UK cannot even get permission to see 26C maxes this summer. if the heatwave was over UK it would had been around 34.9C and 23C at night here which would be very very interesting figures appearing on my WS2500 weather station screen.

Morning all,

Watched the Jays/Mariners game yesterday and the fans in the Rogers Centre looked happy to be under cover with the A/C on! Plus the Jays won!

So, as Jiries reports 37.9c (100.2f) was the high at Toronto Pearson yesterday, which was a an exact tie with the 2001 figure I quoted earlier in the week. So I make yesterday the tied hottest day since 1948...impressive indeed!

No weather statement from EC as yet but here's some highs from Southern Ontario yesterday:

Toronto 37.9c

Windsor 37.6c

London 36.7c

Hamilton 36.4c

Ottawa 36.3c

Only 35c forecast for Toronto today which will have the effect of officially making this a heatwave (3 days or more of 32c or more).

Today some of the worst of the heat transfers eastwards into the big cities of the NE States. Downsloping off the Appalachians often helps raise temperatures there in this kind of set up and New York looks a good bet to reach 100f with the nation's capital forecast to hit 104f.

Currently 11c/9c here at 11am - wonder if that sounds appealing?

Philly looking for 41C too. Currently 38C.

Not sure if these temperatures are accurate, but according to weather.com Death Valley had a low of 19ºC on Monday and Wednesday.

Looking at the averages on wikipedia (assuming they are correct), that could be a record July low temperature.

I wouldn't like to experience temperatures that high for a prolonged period, but it would be an interesting experience for a day or two.

A summary of some of the high temperatures recorded in the NE States Friday, generally in the 102-106f range for the big cities and, for the most part, just a degree or two below all-time records. http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/52779/alltime-records-on-the-bubble.asp

Fortunately this extreme heat is now retreating back southwestwards as a cold front sinks down from Canada. Toronto saw showers yesterday evening and temps today will be 29c rather than the 34c recorded yesterday - much more pleasant in my opinion!

Talking of the cold front - yesterday's storms gave Chicago it's single wettest calendar day with 6.86" of rain falling at o'Hare, over 100 flights were cancelled.

However the heat continues over the parts of the south and the southern Plains. Today will be the 20th day this month that highs in Oklahoma City have reached or passed 100f. A high of 106f forecast for today. I think they are now on a run of 52 consecutive days above 90f! http://www.examiner.com/weather-in-oklahoma-city/okc-50-consecutive-days-above-90

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Hello folks, well last week's heatwave is now a distant memory, but what a memory! As Graeme posted, Hamilton recorded 36c last Thursday with Dundas own weather station reading 37c, the magic 100f! The power did stay on for me at least which is all credit to Hydro One, their power lines didn't even stay up further west from here on Saturday night, but i'll come to that in a second.

Officially a heatwave, we had 6 consecutive days of +30c in the City of Hamilton area, by my reckoning also Humidex alert status stayed in place for 9 days across the region with the high value recorded of 48 last Thursday, a record for Hamilton/Dundas and 37c for Dundas was also a local record as far as i'm aware. The Hamilton Spectator reported on Thursday also that July 21st 2011 was officially the warmest ever recorded morning temperature for the Hamilton area of 26c.

The heatwave broke gradually at first with slightly lower temps on Friday before a major storm front, the same one that washed out O'Hare airport moved in from the west on Saturday night bringing a few hours of torrential rain, thunder and lightning for most of the Golden Horseshoe and also further west outside Sarnia near Watford, Ont. a confirmed EF2 Tornado as reported here :

Environment Canada has confirmed an f2 tornado touched down in
Lambton County of Southwestern Ontario Saturday evening July 23rd
2011. The damage track is one half km wide and 11 km long extending
from 7 to 8 km southeast of Wyoming Ontario to 10 to 12 km south of
Watford Ontario. The damage observed along this path included a barn
destroyed and several steel hydro towers down. This is consistent
with the strength of an f2 tornado with wind speeds in the 180 to
230 km/h range.

No death or injuries were reported in association with this tornado.

And also the report from today's Spec.com - http://www.thespec.com/news/ontario/article/569393--weekend-tornado-near-sarnia-rated-f-2. Pretty significant event that in itself, a while since anything more than an F0 or F1 tornado was reported in Southern Ontario, fortunately with no injuries due to the rural location.

Following this cold front, much cooler. 25c/77f currently in Downtown Hamilton with lots more cloud and much less humid also, if anything better conditions all round. Outlook for the rest of the week remains more unsettled but still fairly warm with temps in the mid-high 20c range.

As for the Jays, i thought i actually made for a better game Graeme played indoors in those unique conditions! And the win made it all the more memorable. It's still a 51-51 season for them, maybe steady rather than spectacular progress for this changed Jays line-up.

Meanwhile Death Valley are very cool for July, it 28C 82F at right now at nearly 1pm there.  Band of light to moderate general rain are effecting the region today.  I never seen 28C at noon time before when July average is 47C.

Edit: It raining now and temps drop to 81.4F, 27.5C.  Very interesting to observe them.

Hello all, hopefully everyone enjoying their weekend. Starting to get back into the 'hot' category here in Dundas after a few days of temps and humidity lower, well 26c-28c. Just touched 30c/86f this afternoon, humidex reading of 37 and we also seen 30c yesterday albiet briefly. During the week, showery rain finally allowed the City of Hamilton to lift it's fire ban which had been in place for all of July.

Going to reach 31c tomorrow projected by EC before more showers arrive overnight into Tuesday. Staying mostly fine with lower humidity returning during the rest of the week.

I see tropical activity starting to fire up down south. We've already seen Don make landfall as a TS on Saturday near Brownsville, TX, a system that most folk in Texas were overjoyed to see as their in severe drought conditions right now. On the horizon near the lesser antilles is a cluster of Thunderstorms which forecasters expect to become the next TS. This one, may have more intent and one to watch over the next several days.

Raining and very cool 78.8F 26C in Death Valley now, 5.3mm of rain so far, 86% humidity and 24C dp,  What a amazing thing to see in July there.  So much interest for me to observe when it rain and temps drop like like a stone.

Been a busy week with family visiting so no time to post but in one sense there's no change - the heatwave continues over the Southern Plains.

Currently 109f in Dallas, TX and 110f in Oklahoma City. I think the all-time high for both cities stands at 113f set back in the dustbowl years of the 1930s.

Dallas has a chance of beating the 42 consecutive days of >100f temps set back in 1980. 32 and counting...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_North_American_heat_wave#Events ) that North Dakota's all time high of 121F had been broken last month, however I haven't been able to verify this.

Anyone else spotted that bit of info elsewhere?

On Wednesday parts of Oklahoma reached 114F:

That's pretty toasty, but quite some way short of the state record of 120F.

As an aside, Oklahoma set its all time record LOW back in February this year, at -31F (-35C), it would be quite something to have the record low and high in the same year
