That's what I love about Calgary.. so much variation in temperature! Next month is when the first snowfall usually occurs.. so I'll be keeping an eye on Calgary.

Hello folks, well we are currently experiencing a re-emergence of summer here in Southern Ontario after temps topped 30c/86f widely yesterday, today we are at 31c currently but now with a threat of some Severe weather as EC show here :

CITY OF HAMILTON

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Severe thunderstorms possible this afternoon..

This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds or heavy rainfall..Monitor weather conditions and listen for updated bulletins.

At 3:05 PM EDT weather radar and lightning detectors indicated a line of intense thunderstorms extending from Orangeville to Waterloo with a potential of becoming severe. The main threats with these thunderstorms are damaging winds, heavy downpours, large hail, and intense frequent lightning. These storms are moving eastward at 50 km/h and possibly may reach the City of Toronto near 3:30 PM.

These storms have now entered the Greater Toronto Area and on radar at least they don't look too omnious - http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/index_e.html?id=WSO. Just to our NW here in Dundas some big cumulor clouds and it does look like it's raining at least in Oakville while Lightning is being reported at Toronto Pearson at this time.

Away from the severe weather it has been nice to feel one last final burst (perhaps?) of humid conditions. Current humidex advisory in place for the City of Hamilton as humidex reaches 40 this afternoon. After a fairly average and non-descript August, September has started as July ended. According to Brett Anderson and indeed EC's own long range forecast, this fall for much Ontario is expected to be well above average and a continuation of summer is expected for September at least. Any frosts in these parts may well have to wait until October. Having said that, forecasts show the risk of frost for many N & C parts of Ontario this coming week.

For the GTA, starting very warm even hot then turning much cooler. Temps expected between 16-20c midweek, only briefly though as next weekend approaches, we should see temps back into the 70sF. Unsettled week ahead though, EC forecasting plenty of chances for showers or longer spells of rain at times. So, once the humidity clears with the T-Storms, it's back to normal for a few days.

As for the Tropics........after Irene last weekend left it's mark more it terms of rain for New England than anything else, it's another Tropical system, Tropical Storm Lee that is set to make all the weather news over the next few days as it unleases a ton-load (literally) of rain on New Orleans. Totals approaching 20 inches and potentially even higher being forecast for LA, Western TX and MS. Major flooding predicted for low-lying areas and some manditory evacuations have taken place in New Orleans already by the Mayor.

Another Tropical system, the 2nd Hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Katia is meadering its way across the Atlantic towards (well, who knows?). This system is expected by Accuweather to become a major hurricane sometime next week but at this time is not expected to cause the east coast of the U.S. any real problems. Some forecasters including Brett are concerned however the Katia will be a bigger issue for Atlantic Canada 9-12 days out.

Whatever your upto, make it a great rest of the weekend.

Calgary still doing well with temperatures! Surely a bit too hot for Calgarians!? - Could Calgary be in for a record breaking Sept warmth!?

http://www.cbc.ca/calgary/

Looks like another week of +25C to +30C, with Wednesday +29C sunny, Thurs +28C sunny, Friday +29C sunny, Saturday, +29C sunny and Sunday +29C sunny.

Your tomatoes will be doing well this year Peter! 🙂

Hello folks, first off just posted on the thread regarding Hurricane Katia's progress now she's leaving the shores of Atlantic Canada. It's going to be interesting to watch how this one plays out and i'm sure many folk in Scotland didn't expect this weather so soon into the Autumn season. Will it affect you Graeme in Fife with the hills to your West enhancing the gusts? From a weather point of view, interesting but from another point of view i hope she diverts to Iceland and leaves Scotland alone.

Also, as tallyho posts below excellent tomato season for Peter i'd think in Calgary with those fairly constant temps. Wonder if you felt any shake Peter from the 6.7 quake that struck Vancouver Island yesterday some 175 miles or so from the centre of Vancouver itself. No real reports of damage and unlike the East Coast quake a couple weeks back, i've not see widespread reporting of tremors being felt far away from this one (i.e. Calgary!??).

Back here, it's been a very quiet week of weather on the whole. Temps have recovered into the 70sF after the projected cooler air arrived at the start of the week. Highs in Hamilton of just 16c/61f on Mon/Tue & Wed, with Wed being particulary horrible, plenty of rain and fog at times especially on the drive home from the office on Wed evening, utterly miserable - low vis at just 2km in rain at one stage - dreadful for the 7th of September.

But, an ok day yesterday at 24c made up for it and humidity although not gone has dropped. As an aside, one of the best times to visit Ontario now in September early October as in general the humidity is almost gone if not totally gone and outwith the rain events that may pass thru you get like yesterday some beautiful conditions. Plus, as the fall progresses, the colours really start to change before the first onset of winter follows later in October, usually!

Outlook for the next few days is good, except Monday where showers are expected. Temps between 22-25c, perhaps looking cooler again later on next week.

As for the states, some amazing contrasts going on again across the USA. From the wildfires in TX which have destroyed homes particulary bad in and around the Austin, TX area to the re-newed and historical flooding that parts of PA have seen since TS Lee's remninds came thru on Wed-Thurs of this past week. Some parts of PA, including the town of Wilkes-Barre have broken their all-time record for flood water levels and i just seen on the news this morning that Binghamton, NY is also dealing with major flooding and damage. All these areas, some 8 states in the Mid-Atlantic/NorthEast alone have not had a chance to clean up properly following Hurricane Irene's visit 2wks ago before Lee dropped more rain.

Whatever your upto make it a great weekend. It looks like the weather in the UK will be making the headlines here over the next few days!

Hello all, seems like ex-hurricane Katia caused quite a stir over the Atlantic but with not too much in the way of damage by what i can make out, thankfully. Highest wind gust my folks said was around 60mph at Prestwick Airport and Glasgow Airport had one at 72mph. Alot of rain i'm hearing from them over the past couple of weeks, ground as soden as it would be in deepest winter in some spots.

Here in Southern Ontario it has turned slightly warmer again earlier this afternoon with temps both yesterday and at 1pm today reaching 26c and a humidex of 32 with that. However, a cold front has came thru this afternoon bringing a shower, there was initially a threat of Severe Weather but in Dundas at least this didn't happen. Now, tonight we see how low the temp goes! Current forecasts have 9c progged for overnight which would be our coolest of the Fall season so far, not ground frost levels - but a notable sign. The rest of the week barring tomorrow where there could be one or two scattered showers around looks cooler and sunnier with highs between 16-18c.

And finally, i'd thought i would post a comment on the Jays as the MLB season reaches a climax before the playoffs begin. 15.5 games back on the Yankees in the AL East and still treading water with the win/loss ratio. Some real high points this campaign as i'm sure Graeme will agree and plenty to look forward too in the coming seasons, however not being a broken record like the Toronto press (ahmmm!) that's another season of promise gone and it feels like we've been talking and writing about the Jays potential since i first arrived in Canada nearly 6 years ago. Probably pass marks for this season because of the potential young talent there but next year really is time to step up to the plate, literally! (However, there not quite as bad as some Ice hockey side from the City, wonder who that could be?) lol.

After the dreadful summer back in the UK, over here in the US it has now been officially declared the second hottest summer on record! Dallas, Texas has passed 100f for the 70th time in a year. A new record. Incredible when you think that it will often only pass 100f there once in a year! Texas is also under 99% drought conditions. Extremely severe. A temporary cool down looks like there from Thursday, but temps are back into the mid to upper 90s again next week.

Hi guys,

Been absolutely overwhelmed at work of late so no real time for posting - likely to remain that way the next week or two.

Great to catch up on all the reports though - the heat over Texas this summer has been incredible, as we've been reporting for some time. http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/55022/dallas-breaks-record-for-most.asp

Couldn't resist mentioning the first snows of the season in Northern Ontario: for example it's snowing now at Geraldton, with an air temp of +2c. Places like Thunder Bay have had an air frost, while the likes of Timmins will max out at 4c today - decidedly chilly airmass for mid-September. Fall indeed is on the way.

Further south, the temp in Toronto and Hamilton has fallen to 7c and tonight is likely to be cooler still at 5c. I love Fall in Canada, wish I was there!

Re the Blue Jays, Stewart, I rate this season as the most exciting since I started following baseball seriously back in 2004. The changes to the make up of the organisation bodes really well for the next few years and we have some very exciting young, controllable players. Good times ahead. I see the Phillies qualified for the play-offs last night courtesy of Roy Halladay. Not a Phillies fan but I wish Doc all the best in his quest for a World Series ring.

Hello folks, once again that dreaded 'W' word has prevented me from having any spare time of late to post, this is my first day off in 9, so thought i'd grab the chance to update while i can!

Since i posted last week, we've seen the lowest overnight temp of just 4c last Friday morning and this followed the lowest daytime temp so far of the Autumn/Fall season of just 14c last Thursday. Rain notable on Monday and again yesterday where it turned into a downpour bringing over an inch and some Thundery bursts to boot as darkness fell last evening. All this unstable air is the cause of an upper level low which is forecast to bring further rain or showers overnight tonight into tomorrow, possibly upto an inch again according to EC.

This same lp, will also likely cause re-newed flooding concerns for parts of the Northeast U.S. just drying out after the wettest August on record in some spots, including NYC.

For us, temps into the 20c range today but gradually falling back as the sun leaves us later for a good few days. Unsettled certainly sums it up, not overly cold just predicted to be gloomy and miserable at times......will feel like W Scotland no doubt!

Interesting to read the posts from tallyho about Calgary's weather over the past few days, it seems like the swings and roundabouts situation is setting up out west with one hot one cold day. La nina also grabbing the headlines over at Accuweather, however having finally had the chance to catch up on Brett Anderson's take on events, it seems unclear right now what difference La nina will make for our winter. He is predicting as things stand (the usual massive dose of salt required for this!) that the West Coast will see a colder than average winter and the East Coast slightly warmer than average including most of Southern Ontario. Snowfall will be average for the GTA with the storm track predicted to be to our North pummelling N & C Ontario and S Quebec. This usually means more icing events for the big cities or just plain rain around here, fingers are crossed this doesn't materilise!

Day off today and tomorrow before another weekend of work right thru to next Friday, hopefully i'll get the chance to post at some stage!

Hi guys always an interesting read but this time I have a vested interest. This time next week I will be in Uxbridge Ontario for a fortnight so I was wondering what type of weather I should expect. Im guessing similar to our summer and around 14 15 degrees and dull.....hoping for some sun though to see the beautiful colours of the trees in their full glory. I noticed some websites saying October was actually quite a dry month for Ontario is this correct? I have only ever been over in July before so looking forward to seeing what the fall has to offer. Not however looking forward to the flight with my 1 year old daughter......horse tranquiliser required i think

You can get some stoters of a days with clear blue sun and lovely nights, if not alittle chilly.

As for October being dry, very similar usually to September in terms of rainfall. I'd pack expecting to see some rain which wouldn't ordinary be the case in high summer with full humidity. October can bring rare first glimpses of snowfall from Huron but it's only happened once around these parts since 2006.

Afternoon all from a gloriously sunny Fife - where was this weather during summertime?

Work has been keeping me very busy too - hope you enjoy your trip to Ontario EDODFC (don't know your name!) Like Stewart I reckon Fall is the best season in Ontario - hope you get your fair share of warm sunny days, cool nights and plenty of beautiful colours.

Certainly has been swings and roundabouts out west but at the moment some real 'Indian Summer' weather. 30c forecast for Calgary today, as Tallyho said, following a high of 28.6c yesterday. The Prairies too get in on the act with Regina, SK also expected to hit 30c today and tomorrow. Superb for the last weekend in September.

Remember back in 2009 Calgary had 6 consecutive sub zero days 9th-14th October after recording 33c in late September - no signs of anything so drastic at the moment but as we all know the seasons change quickly out there!

Meanwhile it's more rain for the already sodden areas of the NE, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley. The late season MLB games in New York were rained out last night so there will be a double header of Yankees/Red Sox on Sunday - close race for the Wild Card and the Blue Jays are having their say in the outcome, defeating the Rays last night to put a dent in their hopes.

Meanwhile Brett's take on the ECM into October suggests warmth for much of Canada with cooler conditions reserved for the Rockies westwards: http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/anderson/story/55441/new-long-range-weather-forecast-update.asp

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Hello folks, quick post as a Wednesday workday draws to a close. Again fairly benign weather here for the past week, only last Friday being wet all afternoon after Thunderstorms and rain arrived late in the day on the Thursday. Temps have been fairly consistant around the 20c range. Today, it's 17c and cloudy but a strong change in the weather is on it's way as October starts.

Saturday sees a cold front push south across Ontario introducing the first major cool plunge of this Fall season. With it, showers, which may be cold enough to see some of the white stuff on the tops of higher parts of rural Southern Ontario, more especially into Central Ontario. This same cold front will also produce the first apprieciable snowfall for the Appiliations down in the U.S. High's forecast for Toronto & Hamilton of just 8c or 46f with an overnight low of 4c as things stand.

Will be very interesting to see how low and whether any snow does fall anywhere in Southern Ontario during this period. It will be a brief interlude to proper Fall though as temps recover to nearer the 20c mark again come Monday as High pressure brings the sun back and settles things down.

I'm off at the weekend and this 'W' stuff won't interfere so will update on our first dip into something winter-like come the weekend.

Hello all, managed to leave the office early on a Friday (just like the old days!) and plan to visit one of the local establishments before dinner this evening. Just a quick update on our change to cool/colder weather, current forecasts from EC now prolonge the effects of the chilly weather thru Sun and Mon. Temps have risen slightly now looking at 11c for tomorrow but dipping to just 7c potentially for Monday.

Alot of showers about overnight bringing further moderate rainfall to the Dundas area, still cloudy and threatening further downpours today. This same pattern just much cooler as the current temp is 16c/61f at Munro Airport is what is forecast for the next few days before it becomes much milder again mid-next week. I'm still for the first time since last Winter going to go onto Snow-watch and if there's any reports i'll let you know. Could also in any clearer spells overnight see a ground frost as temps will be just above 0c in sheltered, rural locations (i.e. our back yard!)

Away for Ontario, Atlantic Canada will be making the headlines this weekend one way or another as current Hurricane Orphelia, which is passing Bermuda as a Cat 3 this afternoon heads in their direction. Here's the latest update for the Environment Canada Hurricane Centre - http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/hurricane/statements_e.html. Looking likely to be a bad storm at the very least and plenty of rain. Must say also that when i read about the Grand Banks being affected, my mind always goes to those hardy, weatherbeaten fishermen out there and the extreme dangers they encounter to make a livelyhood.

I see it's a proper late summer for many parts of the UK, strange weather considering the storm of a few weeks ago although no doubt Graeme, Scotland will be back to normal before long!

Whatever your upto, make it a great weekend everyone.

01 October 2011 09:47:40

Weekend greetings on the 1st October. Our three day warm spell (which peaked with a high of 24c on Wednesday) is now history here in NE Fife - cloudy this morning with the threat of rain later. Still, it was nice while it lasted.

Last night's Game 1 of the ALDS between the Yankees and Tigers was washed out in the second inning thanks to some heavy rain in the Bronx. The game will resume today, while the Rays thumped Texas in the other AL series. Any thoughts on the outcome of the World Series, Stewart? I'd like to see the Phillies win, just so Doc gets a ring, but other than that will be supporting Tampa Bay!

A lot of benign weather over North America right now but as always a couple of spanners in the works. A nasty area of low pressure will bring wind and rain and cool temps to parts of the NE States, with even some high level snowfall for the mountains of West Virginia and SW Pennsylvania. As Stewart mentioned the forecast has backed off the cool temps for southern Ontario with T.O. now expecting highs of 13c and 11c this weekend - below average but not as cool as might have been (11c and 9c for Hamilton, so cooler there).

Ophelia remains a threat to Atlantic Canada with heavy rain likely from a stalled front from another system which may in turn tap into moisture from the hurricane. Tropical storm force winds may effect eastern Newfoundland with the path of the hurricane certainly not finalised yet.

I always look north at this time of year to watch for winter spreading down through Northern Canada. For Yellowstone and Whitehorse nothing too chilly in the forecast for the coming week and indeed Brett Anderson points out that the latest ECM keeps this largely mild theme 'up North' for much of October: http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/anderson/story/55751/long-range-computer-model-forecast-update.asp

Need to keep an eye on the Rockies though and into Alberta for early season snows if that model does prove to be correct.

Enjoy the weekend!
