There may not be much comment about it on here (perhaps due to not wanting to be perceived to be moaning about the heatwave) but out and about there's plenty of comment from people along the lines of "lovely heat but bad for sleeping at night".

Roll on the breakdown I say, and for those who wished for this type of weather, I hope you are suffering too.

EDIT. To add to the problem, something upwind of here is burning, and the air quality is horrible.

There is an escape: air conditioning. We are all willing to pay thousands for central heating systems and hundreds on heating gas, but few seem prepared to pay for ac. That's really the difference between the seasons - winter cold is managed through heating, but in summer people seem to prefer to tough it out.

Surprisingly fresh here this morning after a minimum of 12.9°C at 7am, now 14.2°C at 8am.

It's rising rapidly though thanks to the high cloud to the east having cleared away. Last night was spent between the high cloud just to the east (visible, it was so close) and some low cloud and mist/fog just to the west. I guess that explains why temps fell 3°C lower than is generally the case in and around the Solent region this morning.

The fact that the high cloud still blocked the sun until about an hour ago explains the 7am minimum, a rare occurance at this time of year (usually 5 or 6am for the minimum).

Is it wrong to say I am bored now and would like something to break the weather up a bit, maybe a nice thunderstorm? Carol Kirkwood hinted at some later in the week...

I fully sympathise with those who find it hard to sleep at night - not pleasant.

There's going to be an upwards drift through this week and into the weekend (and we're away Fri/Sat/Sun - hoorah!) so I reckon nights might become a little more uncomfortable.

But this spell is absolutely ideal for me - hot without being manically hot.

Hazy here at Folkestone where the sky has that milky pale look about it due to extensive cirrostratus moving in from France - the sun is shining quite weakly through it making it appear watery. Not one of the better sunbathing days today.

It is feeling quite comfortable temperature-wise at 23 C with 55% humidity, which I have to admit suit me fine anyway as I can leave windows open to air the house out (which is being a pointless excercise as there is that scent of stale hamburgers coming in from somewhere, smells like I'm living next door to a MacDonalds).

As already hinted by me yesterday, I could use a thunderstorm or three to liven things up a bit, not to mention bringing a bit of life back to my poor parched-looking lawn (third season in a row it's gone like this, I might as well pave the bloody thing over).

All this talk of hot nights. I still have my thick duvet on the bed. Temp in the bedroom is typically about 25-26C at midnight which is fine with the duvet turned down to waist level. Window open, obviously, and it's usually cooled down to 21-22C by morning, which surely nobody can possibly find too warm?

I'm keeping the blinds shut on all upstairs windows with the windows left open, which seems to cool things down nicely at night and stop the upstairs heating up too much during the day. An industrial sized pedestal fan in the bedroom helps as well.

If things get really bad then sleeping under a sheet that's been soaked in cold water is my last resort.

Not sure why so many have been moaning about lack of thunderstorms.
I for one would like this weather to continue all summer rather than see a typical 3 warm days then a thunderstorm THEN nothing but cool showery rubbish for ages while we wait for the next warm spell.

I do have an air-con unit but I can only use it overnight when my dad's not home - otherwise it keeps him awake. (As anyone who has one will know, air-con units have whacking great compressors which make a right old racket). I can't afford a proper knock-a-hole-in-the-wall split unit, so I'm making do with one of the portable ones (with a large hose).

So, my strategy at present is to use the air-con for a couple of hours before I go to bed. That gets the air temperature down to 22C or so, which is cool enough to fall asleep with no issues. Within 30 minutes the heat from the other bedrooms, plus that wafting up from downstairs, gets the temperature above 25C. I'm usually asleep by then, so I don't notice it until I wake up the next morning all sweaty and sticky.

If I ever came across a few grand, I would undoubtedly invest in a proper air-con unit, the sort you get in small offices and hotel rooms.
