Ha ha Stewart, I guessed you might be on here today.


It's just plain cold over most of Canada right now with all the major cities bar Vancouver and Victoria subzero, many well below zero. A few mid-afternoon readings:


Toronto -10c
Ottawa -15c
Montreal -14c
Quebec City -16c
St John's -9c 
Halifax -8c


Farther west you're mostly in the -20s.


Not much to add to Stewart's take on the storm. Hamilton looks well set for 15cm (+ enhancement?) I'd say but these storms are notoriously fickle and I don't want to jinx it! Interior New England and into the Maritimes 30cm or 12" will be more the mark. Not a monster snowstorm by the standards of the region but a pretty healthy dumping nonetheless. Some places in northern NS and western NF will get 20cm of snow from squalls before the storm arrives!


Meanwhile a multi day lake effect event off the eastern Great Lakes has left feet of the stuff in some of snowbelt locales. Apparently as much as 71" has fallen in Redfield, NY.


Looking ahead there looks like being a west to east warm up next week though how far north it extends remains to be seen. After that the cold possibly returns with a vengeance by next weekend. Some start to winter!

I'm optimistic Graeme but we've been here before and had some absolute belters and some absolute downers.  Can't remember a time when the air was so cold before a storm arrived though and things do look very nicely set. EC have just in the last 30mins or so upgraded us to a Winter Storm Warning as detailed below :

City of Hamilton upgraded from Winter storm watch

Significant snowfall and blowing snow Saturday.

A disturbance from the Southern Plains States is forecast to track northeast towards the Great Lakes. Latest indications suggest this low will follow a path across Central Ohio Saturday to Central New York State by Sunday morning.

Snow ahead of this disturbance is expected to reach Southwestern Ontario tonight then spread northeast into the remainder of Southern Ontario on Saturday. A total of 10 to 15 cm snowfall amounts are possible for many areas over Southwestern and South Central Ontario by Saturday night.

However, for areas around the west end of Lake Ontario including Hamilton and Burlington, cold easterly winds will pick up extra moisture from the relatively mild waters of the lake. Locally higher amounts of 15 to 25 cm are possible. In addition, strong and gusty easterly winds will develop ahead of this system with reduced visibilities in snow and blowing snow. For this reason, a winter storm warning has been issued for these regions.

Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions.

Please refer to your local public forecast for further details on expected snowfall amounts. Listen for updated watches and warnings.

We did get that heavy flurry activity earlier in the morning unexpectantly coming down from Toronto, around a cm or two in spots - a light dusting really compared to what is to come (hopefully). I've struck gold byt being off on annual leave all this weekend. Hope to get out and about and grab some pics if conditions allow. 


Local radio as i type this talking about as much as 35-40cm (1ft+) by Sunday morning, that would in that event go into the top 3 of all time snowfalls for me here in Dundas....we shall see

Widespread snowfall event possible this weekend.

A disturbance from the Southern Plains States is forecast to track northeast towards the Great Lakes. Latest indications suggest this low will follow a path across Central Ohio Saturday to Central New York State by Sunday morning.

As a result, snow ahead of this disturbance is expected to reach Southwestern Ontario tonight then spread northeast into the remainder of the regions on Saturday.

Current indications suggest a 10 to 15 cm snowfall event for many areas by Saturday night. This could be the first significant snowfall of the season for some locales including Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton and Toronto which so far have escaped most of the lake effect snowstorms experienced over the past couple of weeks.

There is some potential for locally higher amounts of snow from this system in areas around the west end of Lake Ontario, as cold easterly winds pick up extra moisture from the relatively mild waters of the lake. Areas near the north shore of Lake Erie may also receive higher amounts as they will be closest to the track of the low.

How far north the snow spreads into the regions and the total snowfall amounts received will depend on the exact track and intensity of this disturbance. If the low pressure centre tracks a little further north than currently expected, total snowfall amounts may be somewhat higher by Sunday morning.

Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions after the snow arrives by Saturday.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

I've been watching it this evening, starting as all rain and seen it turn steadily to snow as it moves up into Illinois and parts of Indiana. No doubt it will all be snow as it engages the colder air to the NE and heavier as the system develops overnight.

Yes it a waste of life not experience big snow events frequently in here, as I can't imagine being a N American person having so much memory of snowfall events every winter than us here that we only remember few of the 80's snowy spells and few bits from recent winters with Feb 2009 stand out the most for 1 foot of snow.

Interesting you mentioned temps Stewart. It does look like being quite a cold storm with temps held in the -5c to -8c range in the Golden Horseshoe - higher snow ratios as a result and no mixing to worry about with this one. A more extreme example of a cold storm was one I experienced in Jan 2005 (I believe Jiries was in T.O. at the time, too) with daytime readings in the -15 to -17c range while the storm raged. Powder snow and high windchill!

Hello, 13cm as of 2hrs ago here in Dundas, prob nearer 16cm now. Storm hasn't even officially reached us, bulk of the snow expected between 4-8pm. Here's some pics

That was at 1pm! 


TWN just sent one of their guys outside the studio in Oakville and he measured 7" (17.5cm) BEFORE the storm really hits shortly. Radar shows a more intense band of snow into Lake Erie areas and London right now moving towards Hamilton and the Lakeshore. Roads are a mess, but still driveable in many areas - here's a pic taken for TWN from nearby our home on Hwy 6 just coming off the escarpment :

Hi folks,


We got pounded by the next band of snow coming up thru Erie around 5pm. As of now though it still snows but lighter, it appears the radar showing heavier bands to our South & East and also up in Toronto itself. Officially at 5pm YHM put out 13cm of snowfall, this is probably highly inaccurate due to the drifting of the snow going on, it was 18cm outside at 4pm when i last checked, probably nearer 20-22cm now. Guess we will get a better look at things in the morning, for now the City of Hamilton has implentated it's snowclearing policy of Cat 1 & 2 roads which means i'm stuck unless a bulldozer is handy in the morning  as they details below:
