After finally having 4 mornings of frost and lying snow here in the micro climate of Glenmoriston , NW Highlands which has slightly helped salvage the winter. Yes we have had some dramatic weather here, storm force winds and heavy rain but I have lived up here for 12 years and this is the most dire, sad, depressing excuse for winter I have experienced. The models have swung from one thing to the next, I have never felt so bored of my favourite hobby and almost ready for a new hobby or a move away.
Roll on spring and lets hope we have a proper warm spring we need it after this excuse for a winter.

A snowless winter for much of lowland Britain so far with no end in sight of the wet and relatively mild conditions....Oh dear .

A few days of cold and snowy weather would be nice but the weather will do what it will do and I can take it or leave it these days in any case..so perhaps its not as bad as it could be. We were somewhat spoilt between Jan 2009 and April 2013 so I guess we must be grateful for the memories.

The window that was wide open for 'core winter' at the start of December is now already more than half way closed and inching closer and closer to the frame every day that passes.

The kids are asking 'where's the snow this year Daddy ?' Having been born in 2007 and 2009 they in a current generation that EXPECT snow every year.

They looked shocked when I tell them that some winters remain completely snowless here in Kent.

On the positive note.. the evenings are drawing out, the sun is climbing ever higher in the sky and there are daffodil shoots popping up in places.

Cold air still persisting across eastern USA and Canada: - This could be bad news for us, usually colder air over there means milder and wet weather for us!

This TWO forecast by Brian Gaze - says - January slightly below average temperatures and precipitation below average" - hasn't it been the opposite? I know there are two weeks yet, but there's no sign of any settled weather or cold???

This isn't a rant, just wondering!?

Sometimes things creep up on you, and it's only really now that I've realised that I don't even look in here any more. All that I need is Brian's Facebook updates, and in the event of anything interesting in the offing I'd be back here like a shot.

But basically this has been a slightly more active winter so far, with far more wind, and certainly wet, though up here the rivers haven't even threatened to fill up too much (I work right next to one).

One morning (one of very few that this has happened) I walked out of the house and found the car frosted up. My view of cold weather subconsciously came out at that point with several expletives. That would never have happened a few years ago.

So I'm not moaning about the weather too much. We've had wind, rain, and unlike previous years a decent bit of sunshine between systems. It's also been a bit of a bonus on the cost of heating front. Ten years ago it was cheap, not that we knew or appreciated it at the time!

Not a flake of snow here. I can't even recall when there was even the random possibility of it. In years gone past that would have been frustrating, but the recent run of winters have satisfied my need for that. Frozen and damaged pipes and fearing driving off our estate have somewhat diminished my need for a bit of the white stuff.

That said if it does happen, as I say, I'll probably be more excited than I realise

What's happened to that "Younger Dryas" bloke that used to bang on all the time that we were entering into another ice age!!

Given our ridiculously mild winter, he seems conspicuous by his absense!!

Well talking from the 15th and 16/1/14, - Haha...classic especially "A taste of winter mid month!" =- Just shows that no one can accurately forecast the weather! On a final note well done Daily Express for hyping up the big Freeze and 4" of snow.

Month ahead                                          - December 27, 2013

Valid from 27/12 to 26/01 2014
Colder January

Issued: Friday 27th December 2013
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling & Captain Bob

A taste of winter mid month

A downward trend in temperature looks set to take place through the early part of January. Despite the storm, unsettled start, January is probably going to become cold. There is the possibility of a taste of winter mid month with many places seeing some snow. Confidence is considered moderate at this time.

*12/1/14......18/1/14*
Temperatures continue to fall through this week. The winds turning more north to north-easterly. There is an increasing risk of sleet and snow across eastern and southern parts of the country. Scotland, Ireland and most of Wales and northwest England may stay cold but dry with some sunny spells.
Wintry conditions could persist in the south and east for a time. Daytime temperatures around 2 or 3C in southern England, 1 or 2C in Scotland with some very sharp overnight frosts.

You know things are bad when most the weather sites offering 14day and Month ahead forecasts dont have any fancy snow symbols showing for your area ...of course they can be taken with a pinch of salt, not that we will be needing much of that this Winter by the looks of things

Referring to tallyho's post above which I can't quote without it looking messy, the Mail & Express headlines were of course sensation and based on some crooked forecasting, no names mentioned.

The trouble is that in the great world of the skim-reader it will be the Met Office that gets the flak.

The whole forecasting industry is smeared by these crooks, and there seems to be nothing that can be done about it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand the annoying gale force southerly wind is back again - and it is set to last for most of tonight and into tomorrow going by the models. C'mon, can't I at least go for more than two days without my house getting battered by strong winds? Since when this end of Kent has decided to become the world's most windiest place?  I've noticed lately that Xcweather always seem to show the strongest wind being over the south coast, I think mbradshaw would feel right at home if he was to come over here for a holiday break.
Still, at least it'll help with the drying up process I suppose, especially today where no rain has fallen so far all day.
