I've known since early January that this winter would be a hopeless write-off but could never imagine it would turn out this bad. I thought we would at least see a brief snowy spell but the dross just goes on and on with 200mm of rain now racked up in just 4 weeks it just keeps getting worse and worse for wintry weather ore anything even remotely tolerable
Who on earth could believe that December would turn out the wintriest month but January and February have been so vile that the first week of December has had more frost hours and snow days than the rest of the winter combined
Absolutely disgraceful not to even manage a snowcover during winter 57degrees north. 1988/89 is the only other winter not to but it's understandable not to see much snow when it is exceptionally mild and dry. This winter there is barely a dry day, an extreme lack of mild yet still nothing
It hasn't even reached -3C - something even 1988/89 managed - and so far in February it's not got to -1C and there has been less than 10 hours of frost. Today is yet another digusting cold, grey windy day with the threat of rain after yet another large total yesterday.
December was very dry for the first 3 weeks and even January had a 5-day dry spell. The relenteless low pressure this month beggars belief. Barometric pressure currently averaging only 979mb - more than 32mb below average and 11mb below February 1990 which had the lowest mean pressure in almost 150 years of records.
