I was cycling to town in bright sunshine when all of a sudden... towering clouds and hail.

It wasn't very dramatic to be honest, pea sized at best, but I did have to stop moving for a bit

Sunny all day in Edinburgh apart from a rogue, brief but heavy soft hail shower at 1pm. White shafts lit by sun speeding towards me, I just knew it was soft hail!

Seen a lot of hail this year as well. Kind of makes up for the lack of snow!

Already seeing some sferics off the Dutch coast this morning.

A showery set-up for the south-east today and into the evening with some heavy stuff possible, even wintry over high ground

Hi Dave! I'm sure people are waiting for someone to say this, so I might as well say it anyway.
If it is mid-Janaury right now, we'd probably be dealing with a Channel snow streamer getting ready to move inland to give us snow later on in the day. But, as things stand, it is all too little and too late for it since there are no real surface continental or upper deep cold to tap into.
That said, though, we may JUST about get to see some wintriness should any of the showery stuff peppering the South East today does get heavy enough later on in the day (late afternoon/early evening?).

Had a CG strike not far from my building... almost immediate crash of thunder

Some pea-sized hail fell with the rain, but it was sporadic, and the rain not that impressive - must have caught only the edge of the cell.

It's a funny old day really, with storms tracking NW and temperatures in the high single figures... like a summer setup without the heat, although it does feel a bit muggy out there.
