And still it continues. 13 hours and counting. Huge claps of thunder. This better had cleared up by pub time

According to the models, it should start to be raining at this end by 3 pm, but at the moment its actually being quite lovely and it seems to be quiet on the French side. So any storms that does spring up around here are going to have to be sudden surprise development if it has to match my forecasting expectations.

Good point Ben - just traced back those storms through time and they are ongoing from overnight, which given the overnight setup we had means they are probably of the elevated kind.

Despite this, they're still declining a bit as they make the Channel crossing.

Depending on what they do upon reaching the UK, they may only be a nuisance factor interrupting the solar heating for a time.

The convergence line hasn't moved much so far today, but it appears to be just starting to edge eastward, with cells firing up close to Ppole and Salisbury now.

It's reassuring for areas east of there that this convergence line is looking very capable of eliminating convective inhibition and unleashing the CAPE that builds up ahead of it.

What's rather exciting is the potential for the storms firing up through the afternoon to become ever more intense as the afternoon progresses.

Not overly hopeful for up here (heavy showers more the order of the day), but I think that area of storms pushing east from the Bristol area shows all the signs of expanding and becoming pretty potent.

The last of the 'old generation' storm activity is now fading away across southern parts, and at the same time the first of the new generation of convective cells have popped up over France - mere pennies compared to what could develop over the next 6 hours or so.

I wish I could say 'will develop' but as ever I'm playing the 'cautiously optimistic' card

Torro has issued a convective discussion. Confidence too low at this stage for a watch but it could be upgraded.

Meanwhile the sun is out here now and the temperature is responding accordingly. Has just reached 25.0C. Dew point is a little over 19C and it is very muggy indeed.

Just looking at that little development in France, halfway between Le Mans and Le Havre. Could this be the first signs of things getting lively from the South again?....

Sun out now and very hot and muggy! The storms starting to spawn over France seem to be moving n/ne so Kent could get a nice surprise later. For this area we could do with storms developing over Cherbourg more but as yet there is no evidence of this.

The convergence line has initiated and rapidly developed a cell right over Andover. Its not electrified yet but in theory it won't be long now... it looks impressive from here in Reading.

This is to the east of the earlier activity and shows the progression of said convergence line eastward.

I've been out for a bit of a walk round, experiencing the rare combination of high humidity and deep blue (i.e. very clear) skies above. Sure feels sweltering with an air temperature of 26*C and a dew point of 17*C, the former rising steadily.

Pictures and videos are all over social media.

Rathe than paste pictures, I am posting this link to the local newspaper's report and more to the point the follow up commehts some pictures.
