Well Winter has well & truly arrived in Central Asia. Bishkek getting more snow again below on the webcam.

BBC forecast for there looking great, Sunday looks like having 12 hours of constant heavy snow.

With last Winter being the wettest on recorded and virtually no snow for the majority of the U.K. and then rolling into the warmest year on record you have to wonder what this winter will hold keeping in mind that after the last model outputs the signs for cold and snow look very bleak this side of Christmas if you base your winter on Snow only etc

That's not unusual though especially in the South and then there is still two months of winter to play for.

IF we didn't witness any snow again it would be a surprise but after all it is the weather and we can't control it, but this year most of us have said it can't get any worse than last and surely a snow free winter cannot happen back to back...so would the build up to next winter be classed as third time lucky 

Anyway let's not get too concerned just yet...it's only the 4th day of Winter

I often hear that too cold for snow bxllox. No idea why that is such a widely heard saying!

Exactly, ...because it never snows in Moscow does it 

Its more to do with association by those not familiar with how weather systems work.

ie bitterly cold for days, probably from an easterly wind.  Dry air  - no snow.

Front arrives from the west, bringing slightly warmer air, snow.

Perception, the rise in temperature made the atmosphere snow.

The opposite is often the case in this country, where people say its not cold enough for snow.....especially in the spring with warm surface temps and bitterly cold uppers-  where we have showers.  Where it doesnt feel that cold at the surface, in some cases as much as 6-7*c, but when the clouds arrive the temps drops to 0-1*c very rapidly.

I think what also helps that city in Central Asia is it's a landlocked country, a long way from any sea that could substantially influence it's temps & weather. That's why in Summer it is scorchingly hot - high 30's every Summer without fail and mid 30's most days. And in winter it get's influenced from Siberian airmasses dropping south with very cold air. Being a high up city no doubt helps in Winter as Bishkek is as far south as Northern Spain, so it does need some height.

Snow still coming down there. Ready for the main event on Sun.  I think the area has an interesting climate. Has proper extremes.

Bookemarked that webcam. Anyone got any other good ones? I remember there was a Scandinavian one knocking about on here a few years back that looked out over a parking lot. Was always snowy in winter. 

Yes, I have frequently heard that in England and it is of course rubbish. However, you can see why the old wive's tale came about - it is because very cold weather in England is often associated with very dry, stable, continental air and in those conditions it does not snow until a low pressure cell nudges in with rain turning to snow - naturally it warms up then.

It is very rare for us to get a real Polar low, but we can get heavy snow in a strong and very cold easterly.

Well, I can bring you the return of snow photos from Bjorli..... but quite shockingly, we have very little atm  The big snow will come at some point soon though. I guess it is back to searching for scandi troughs again

Only been watching since May and seeing some of the world's biggest cruise ships docking is fascinating. There is always something going on, and time will tell if much snow will turn up, but it sure has potential.

Hoping to get the real big snowfalls soon as from what I have read, the signs are pointing to a colder 2nd half of winter. A colder winter will normally mean a drier period for here... given the likelihood of a Scandi HP.

Working on a very simple, user-friendly website, solely on showing my whole Bjorli (and Lesjaskog) snow photo collection and for adding new ones from now on. Soon ready.

for those of you who get snow over the weekend hope you enjoy it you jammy so and so, im jelous, i hope the south cop a load of snow at some point this winter, tho winter looks balanced for us down south long as xmas period is wet windy stormy cold snow im happy i dont want mild and sunny for xmas period it pea,s me of that does, lol

Sizzle how have you come to the conclusion that the Christmas period will be wet and stormy....................Christmas Day is 20 days away?????

3 air frosts for this winter, the same as the whole of last winter and we are still in the first week.
