Heavy snow in South Edinburgh and settling readily now

I would expect snow turning readily to rain will be a common pattern for any showers.

Still wet snow in Edinburgh. Settling above 100m. But sleet down in Leith at sea level. So snow level lower today

Once again a bit of snow cover at the top of the M62 summit - bearing in mind this is about 380m asl. Nothing lower than that.

A quite intense shower of graupel an hour or so ago left a nice white covering, but the snow that GS often precedes did not materialise.

The M8 corridor has has a decent dusting:

The one on the bottom left is at 250m the top left is 150m, so it looks like 150m is close to the snowline.

Met office have issued snow warnings covering much of Scotland for today and till 10AM tomorrow putting the snow line at 150m. 2-5cm at those levels 10cm above 300m on western facing slopes.

I could be mistaken but I thought the meto had warnings out for the Midlands area regarding snow also? Now it seems it's been removed and only Gales for them which is surprising and an interesting risk.

That forecasting in these type of atmospheric conditions is really difficult - even for the pros.

Got a little bit of a wet snow shower on the way into work. It way laying on the high level roads (above 200m) but as I came down in Edinburgh it cleared to sleet pretty quick.

Today I'd expect much of the north to have a series of very wintry showers predominantly sleet or rain, but with a wee bit of wet snow in the mix. Anything that lies on the ground will melt quickly as the westerlies keep temps stubbornly just a knife width too warm. The showers will during the day tend to become more confined to exposed westerly slopes, but we will see a few more organised bands of rain moving Northwards over Northern England. As night falls the risk of showers will increase again over lower ground.

Higher ground (>300m), especially westerly slopes have the best chance of getting some decent snow cover and in the wind some drifting, rapid melt can be expected in the 200-300m range.

Tomorrow's low looks to have shifted slightly further South again, the risk of snow remains for the southern side of the penninines and exposed higher ground in Yorkshire, but it's becoming increasingly marginal, todays update on the Met's snow warning will be interesting.

warnings out for north wales through to south lancashire (manchester area and through to cheshire ) and across to yorkshire for snow tonight

I reckon this is purely precautionary for the odd very small pocket that will wake to snow on their windscreens. I think ICE will be the main issue to all the above locations mentioned.

What is the possibility of that rain in ROI to come up here? Its 3.8c and it definitely cold enough for snow?

I feel like I have had a wasted opportunity for snowfall (lying) so hopefully something happens tonight.

Plenty of snow flakes fell in central Edinburgh this morning, but none of it laid, just a wee bit of slush that is melting in the sun that had just came out.

No showers here. All avoiding me.. A bit disappointing this cold spell.

I feel like ever since 2010 its been a disaster for snow.

We had thunder snow between 5.30 and 6 am this morning.  I lay in bed watching the lightning and then realised it was also snowing, albeit wet snow but my car windscreen was covered for a while.  For the rest of the day we've had sleety showers.

The system Fri am now on GFS 12Z. Closing and deepening as it moves from Merseyside and exits Humber. Across the far S and S Coast a period of gales with 60-70mph gusts. To the N and higher ground especially snow is likely overnight, as previously forecast.

Another downgrade with the snow. Looks like even Kinder Scout will only get the lightest of coverings.

failing that, windscreens with slush on them in the majority of favoured areas.
