Sheffield was built on seven hills on the southern Pennines, so we usually have a good chance of seeing snow.


 


At its lowest point the city stands just 29 metres above sea level at Blackburn Meadows on the Rotherham border, rising up to over 500 m in some parts of the city to a peak of 548m at High Stones on the Derbyshire border. However, 89% of the housing in the city is between 100 and 200 metres above sea level.

 Very much so!


As I said earlier, the temp in MBY at 7am was 9.1c. Looking on XC Weather, the temps at both Liverpool & Manchester Airports is now 4c. Quite a drop over a few morning hours, and long may the temp drop continue!

I spent three years at uni in Sheffield (94-98 with a year out in 96/97) which was hardly a classic era in British winters and yet I saw plenty of snowfalls. Deepest one was in Jan 96 which dropped about 9 or 10 inches and hung around for three weeks. Although I did live in one of the highest parts of the city, at about 230m asl, at the time.

I have often wondered this.  Met office maps aren inconclusive.  Using official met office historic stations, three candidates  would be Durham, Bradford and Sheffield. Bradford and Sheffield stations are the same altitude which is ideal given both cities range up to 350m asl.  Problem is there is no public data on snow stats using the historic section! 


I would guess at Sheffield over Bradford given Nw showers seem to push into that area better and its further east so benefits more from easterlies. As for Durham it must be a candidate as it is so far north and benefits from northerlies as well and is slightly inland. 


Wish there was more data available to draw conclusions.

Looking like a repeat of last weeks debacle around these parts, temps have been fluctuating between 5.2c - 5.9c since 9am this morning and any showers have been of the liquid variety. Tonight we're supposed to see snow showers moving into the region, I have my doubts and any that do fall as snow and accumulate will quickly be washed away by tomorrows PM rain.

Only a few flakes so far down at this level.  Mostly soft hail, one shower moving through now.  Very gusty wind.   I see MetO have brought forward the warning from 1700 to 1130.  Can't see anything TOO significant on the radar though...

Went through a very heavy snow shower between Blackford and Dunblane on the A9 heading to Glasgow this morning. Settling readily despite the wet ground.

Had a few snow showers blow through this morning but the most sustained and heaviest is currently falling. In fact, with the strong winds and the amount of snow falling, it wouldn't be exaggerating to say blizzard conditions! How often have I said that in recent years?!

Cold spell at the cemetery this morning.Temperature dropped, wind got up. faces got stung by frozen snow.  Rather open there as wind comes through the valley off  the Severn....
