Certain parts of the NW have done very well actually :-)

Edit - sounds smug, don't intend it to :p

I'm just really chuffed we did well for once. We've missed out a lot recently, especially winter 2013/14 when Lancs and Merseyside got buried.

Interesting to see a sleet/snow band has sprung up in southern Scotland, tracking south.

Recent soft hail shower with snow on it's back edge - settled on all surfaces as the air temp. was -1.3C before it arrived. Now +0.1C

20 minute hail shower here starting around 4:15...well, it was a covering of sorts. 2 deg temp drop too, but only rain behind it.

Again Milder here on the wirral. Watched some amazing hail showers rolling in over the wirral from y office in Liverpool earlier today. As the sun rolled down towards Wales and the horizon you could see some very impressive CN clouds forming.

Wont be getting any snow for a while here is these conditions persist. We need a few decent frosts and a wind thats not from the sea to help things, but that usually means being dry. Such a pants place to be for snow. Still to see any depth over 4 inches here for going on 10 yrs.

The Wait continues.

Light rain here and temps and DP are exactly the same as last night, just shows all the parameters need to be in place for snow in the UK.

Local lookeast forecast suggested quite a showery weekend starting in the early hours tonight. but unfortunately it did seem to be a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow.

Most i saw that year was abut 2.5 inches from one snowfall, and i think that was more than most got in my area... 7 miles away in Parts of West kirby on the coast got 5-6 inches on the 23 rd march.   They seemed to be just a bit closer to the intense snowfall in wales... strangely on the other side of the River Dee.

But apart from that we kinda missed out too.  I remember further in land towards Manchester had virtually no snow in parts from the mahoosive 23rd march blizzard.

if i remember correctly alot of those slider lows  that year provided for us nothing more than a few snow squals and a dusting followed by a rapid thaw.

Still reckon it was a brilliant year though becuase the way the snow developed was so exciting.

Just had a soft hail shower which left a coating on all surfaces. There's still snow cover on the lawns and that makes a third dusting in as many nights. Interesting cold spell so far.

Award this forecast a 60% chance of being roughly correct:

Developments in the last few hours, coupled with current dps and temps and the E4 WRF ppn charts, suggests some central regions and down into CS and SE England could see some snow overnight. A clump of showers of moderate intensity at times are due to run NNW to SSE and exit the SE around 8am, which would maximise the chances even in low altitude S areas given the lowest ambient air temps at that time.

Worth a watch if like me you're still to see a flake.

PS - still got lying snow here from last night's fall. It was only about 4cm max on the grass this morning, but still a covering - strangely even where the sun has been on it. All roads/pavements mostly clear, but widespread thin, icy covering on grass.

So this must have coincided with higher 850s and DPs etc. anyway, hopefully tonight will be different as 850s will be lower again, so my altitude should help. I know it's not hugely high, but compared to many places in the SE its a good altitude. Unless you live right on the top of a hill like Mr Gaze.

As to this spell, it looks to end up being over a week of cold, so heading into the prolonged category (what do we define as prolonged?), however the uncertainty in what will happen next clearly shows around the 7th Feb on the GEFS for the SE (and even then 850 average is circa -8c) which is well into FI. So too far into FI to predict with any certainty at all, so enjoy the next few days instead........😀

In the interim, the radar shows it moving through Merseyside/Cheshire (Wirral's right in the firing line, the main PPN blob is too far west for here). Problem is, the coastal fringes are just too warm, and I think it will only be rain/sleet (maybe some hail) until it's a good 20-30 miles inland or with altitude (higher parts of Flintshire could get a few cm's)

All in all, though, the PPN seems to be ploughing through at a rate of knots, so I doubt any PPN will last for more than 30-40 mins.

I remember the blizzard of march 23rd - in Ellesmere port it rained a mile down the road in every direction it was snowing.  Such an isolated area.  I wouldve been suicidal had i lived there.

Still dam and cold here in Wirral.  Not much to report.  Waiting for the real cold to hit tomorrow.  As Metoffice says - less marginal conditions arriving by Sat Afternoon - just intime for alot of dry weather :(

Heavy snow showers when I left Stoke tonight, roads were pretty bad, I had to change cars as I slid down the hill in one of them and it wasn't safe, so I opted for my smaller Citroen C2 which is great in snow.
