Remember we are still experiencing 30mph gusts here and in Scotland (where it is falling to at or below zero) it is gusting to  50mph and will probably grow stronger overnight. So hardly any diurnal  cooling is taking place.

These temperatures are however gradually falling over the whole country. It s now dropped to 2.1C here in urban Birmingham.

The breeze certainly has an effect. It just doesn't feel cold though is what I'm getting at. Considering every forecast I see tells me we are in a cold snap and how bitter it feels. It just doesn't. Not here anyway, and even those who've had snow have also had rain at times before and since. It's a pitiful excuse for a cold spell for most of the southern half of the UK and looks like staying that way for many.  

I think it's been explained adequately. Stiff breeze, mixing continues, no cold pooling, minimal frost.

Last night it got down to 2.0c under hail and icy sleety rain with a stronger breeze and I must admit I did expect it to be much, much colder tonight. But as you rightly said, the stiff breeze doesn't help temperatures to fall. Perhaps better luck for a colder and crisp night Sunday night and next week. 

Time will tell. It's currently +4.2c and I have been home from work for an hour and a half now and the temperature has risen by that 0.2 of a degree. - Still more or less clear but the sky is becoming milky and stars less visible so it could be clouding over. This isn't a rant just an observation, thanks for your above explanation.

If there wasn't this breeze (picking up now) we would easily be down to freezing or below and not stuck at +4c to 4.2c for several hours under clear skies. 

Yep probably. One thing in favour of snow rather than wet slush tonight is the dewpoints. They've dropped away significantly this afternoon and are below freezing in most areas.

Now we need the ppn! The MetO high-res ppn model is obviously picking-up a signal for ppn to develop down the spine of the UK tonight and the radar may be seeing the first signs of that now with light flurries into Birmingham, Nottingham and Sheffield.

I've been following the new DWD ICON model for the precip/snow in France - it has performed well so far - even picking out the placement for orage cells.

Yes that's not a bad performer, i's just the scale that makes it not the model of choice for the UK region.

There is a finger of light snow making it's way down the M40 now towards Oxford, other sporadic flurries between Derby and Lincoln and a decent clump of deeper ppn on the NE coastal region S of Newcastle.

Don't think so. I saw a similar drop, from 6.5C to 0.0C in two minutes. Admittedly while driving up a hill. 

Just had a heavy shower of large snow flakes which settled briefly, but with marginal temperatures here it's only served to make all surfaces damp and the currently light snow is struggling to find a foothold

Had a light flurry earlier and yes it has settled and remained .. Only on grass, Tarmac and car roofs though.

The flurry was so light you can count the individual flakes lol
