It's quite odd, isn't it? I don't know why the estuary should be killing the showers, but it's doing a good job!

That said, as it's 4.9C / 0.7C it would just be cold rain anyway.

Hopefully the colder air - sub -5C 850s - will finally make it tonight!

Lerwick and Camborne have them (and have data - I'm envious of that -7C at 850 in the Westcountry) but our local one, Herstmonceux, only sends balloons up at midnight. I don't know when the data becomes available, but as it was only 70 minutes after midday when I checked those it must be pretty soon afterwards!

A snip from Wikipedia for example:

Uses of ACARS outside aviation[edit]

In 2002, ACARS was added to the NOAA Observing System Architecture. Thus commercial aircraft can act as weather data providers for weather agencies to use in their forecast models, sending meteorological observations like winds and temperatures over the ACARS network. NOSA provides real-time weather maps.

No chatter on the next round of potential let-down, as shown on the E4 model for Tuesday?

Monday 18.00 - area of PPN (mix rain/snow) appears to the north of Scotland

http://expert-images.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/euro4/2015/02/01/basis06/ukuk/prty/15020218_0106.gif

Tuesday night it moves south, becoming completely snow by the time it's over southern Scotland

Providing it maintains its intensity, it would give a decent fall of snow over much of the country.

Just back from the Peak District, just past Leek. The road was supposed to be closed to Buxton but was clear. As were most side roads, the farmers have been busy. The wind chill was awful. Knee deep+ snow in parts, the drifting is quite severe. Will post pics later.

Theres lots of talk about it not being that cold. For sure this Winter Scotland and the N.W are getting the really cold weather. As is often the case the bulk of the South East and south are milder. Protected somewhat by the long track of airstream from the north and north west.
In winters with A high over the north east feeding in easterly winds from Russia and beyond would give ehe South east especially deep freeze conditions with temps below zero for days on end and lots of Snow. Its been a long time since we had a winter like that. Maybe it will be a few years yet coming.
Anyway February now, the evenings are getting lighter and thoughts turn to Spring.
Lets hope we see lots of thunderstorms this year, we had a lot locally last year.

Crocus are in flower, daffodils are everywhere with the odd few even in flower. Also yesterday I saw the first tree with blossom, some kind of prunus I think.

Blackbirds are starting to sing their little hearts out on an evening again.

Spring has arrived down these parts.

It is rather amusing that the only snow we have had here in Aberdeen fell during the first few hours since Wednesday that the city did not have a weather warning out for snow. Somewhat of a "forecasting fail" I'm afraid.

Maybe I should just hope the ones for the next few days are cancelled! Nice to see things look at least a little white. The ground is dry and frozen in places so the little snow there is actually blows across the frozen surfaces when the wind picks up. Looks pretty dry now.

After my moan earlier I've now had a decent day away from the models, a hearty roast, a few pints of the local brew and am feeling more optimistic about the period Weds eve to Fri eve.
The conditions are 'favourable' for streamer/lake snow trains in the E and SE during this period. Not ideal - just favourable.

It's not felt as cold as I would've thought this weekend. Certainly not 'raw' like the forecasts originally suggested. Might be just me!

I'll take cold and settled this week, as long as we get some sunshine.
