Now that the cold spell appears to be coming to an end (albeit slowly), I think we should all (as a nation) express our gratitude to P!ers *****. If he hadn't written to the Prime Minister on 23 January (http://www.***********.com/) with Weather Action's "Extreme" warning for February, I shudder to think how the nation would have coped with the sprinklings of snow and a terrible weather type called "frost", which are both seemingly "extreme" winter weather. phenomena. Looking back, it really puts December 2010, January 1987 etc into perspective - I thought they were harsh and severe spells, but the last couple of weeks have clearly been in a different category altogether.

We are, according to P!ers, in "the new mini Ice-Age", so we should brace ourselves! I have cleared my local supermarket of salt, de-icer and bottled water in preparation. I'm surprised that a national newspaper hasn't picked up his forecasts and presented them in a calm, balanced way for the benefit of the nation...

Still no thaw of lying snow still from last Wednesday and Friday. Most urban areas it has melted but the grass and country there is still lots. Not bad really, despite the lack of falling snow this week.

It's 2 deg c here . I was surprised how hard the ground was this morning at 10.00am even though it had been above freezing for some hours. I was surprised at how breezy it was and again how crunchy the ground was when I waled the dog over wet fields at 5.00 pm ....just colder than I was expecting....

This weekend is the cold spells Swan Song with glorious weather in the Lake district under a strong inversion. Went out on to the fells yesterday setting off in freezing fog, climbed to 1,800 feet and was greeted by a view of heaven

Beautiful frosty morning but clouded over by midday. The long cold spell now over with today being the last morning with >50% snowcover in my garden. But 8 days snow lying so far in February to add to the 14 days total (2 + 8 + 4 consecutive days) in January has given a wonderful mid-winter period with three snowfalls and lots of cold frosty nights and sunny days which preserved the snowcover.

Its been frosty every morning of February so far here, and tomorrow morning looks like another one (already freezing again). It was a stunning sunny day, and warm in the sunshine since that east wind died down....

Many fields still white here, even though air temperature topped 8C the ground stayed near freezing especially in shade.
There has been snow cover since about the 30th January.

Todays satellite image shows a white splodge which is...us.

Where do you get those excellent statellite photos?

I find it difficult to judge what is cloud and what is snow cover.
