Have recently seen some lightning in the extreme western sky within a gigantic distant storm cloud.
Constant rumbles from large cells trundling past just to the west of here between 9.30 and 10.15 BST - just a few spits of rain but was underneath the anvil for a time and was treated to a cc lightning display - some overhead with a flash rate of 1 per second!

Check out some of the photos coming in from these storms.
Hail with steaming fields.
Wonder where the blob over western France will go
No doubt it will die out or go east as soon is it gets near England but one to watch for later tonight and in to the morning

Occasional thunder and bright purple flashes. Better than nowt!
A wonderful show of distant lightning here from the storm way to the NW of me. Never seen such frequent distant lightning before, getting on for one flash per second.
Must be an epic storm for anyone underneath this thing!

Edit: Looks like it has just taken a direct hit and gone offline!!
Further edit: back now
We don't normally do thunderstorms in Penrith but tonight the sky is lit up by lightning strikes every few seconds with thunder crashing across the sky.
A rare sight in Penrith indeed.

WOW!!!!! Just WOW!!!! excellent!!! hail over 1cm here, plenty of leaves down and strobe like lightning........ plus cooler from the deluge!!!!
The storm earlier looked like it had supercell characteristics and this is similar.I do not have access to base or storm relative velocity data so can't say for sure if it is a supercell but the radar signature looks interesting. Reports of large hail and very gusty winds.
That storm is incredible - the lightning even here was so bright, strobe-like. Just a shame that it skirted by to the north west - so close to something memorable.

Funny thing is that I would expect to have heard at least some thunder. Not a peep.
Radars are completely useless in this sort of situation; they are just saturating. All we know for sure is that the rates are in excess of 250mm/hr (NW radar), I can't find a radar that has a more extreme scale.
