While we ease into some relatively fresh weather let's turn attention back to France where the canicule is still in full swing:
All time temperature records set on Tuesday for Boulogne, Dieppe and Melun with Paris hitting its second highest reading of 39.7 beating the 2003 heatwave.
40C recorded Tues in the SW and today in both Vichy and Clermont Ferrand in the Massif Central. I'm waiting to see if that's a record or not.
Last 4 days in Southern Burgundy have been 35, 38, 37, 38. Next 4 days forecast on the 12z GFS to hit 38, 39, 35 and finally 40 in a last hurrah before it gets cooler.
It's every bit as intense by day as the 2003 heatwave, but I do t think the human cost will be anywhere near as severe because it's just over he the duration of that event, and the nights have been notably cooler (around 20-21C compared with 25-26C in 2003). It's the warm nights and humidity that kill people in heatwaves.
I think this is partly a function of airmass source (Spain via Pyrenees), partly time of year.
