Lots of lightning circling us here. Not much rain yet. Few very big spots. Like the photo. Just picking up a new cell to the south of us with vigorous lightning. No sleep for a while. 😊
Observations from around GUILDFORD in SURREY and now Nottingham

We missed the storm that's giving one hell of a light show, it passed some miles East of Frome but I can see the lightning which is constant. A few impressive CGs but mostly high based flashes that were mostly obscured by lower cloud.

That was a lively hour to say the least.

Flashes every second or less, rumbles every 5-10 seconds, crashes once or twice a minute and some real 'tearing' sounds to be enjoyed during the peak of the storm.

As I type the storm is showing me its rear end - I can see the flashes lighting up the towering clouds a brilliant orange, while the base remains cast in shadows. Very epic stuff and I wish I could get snapshots with my PENTAX but it suddenly went nuts and cut out. Still... got a lot of HD video footage to look through after sleep

The power's been on and off a bit lately. Backup routes doing their job I guess.

The rain was biblical for a time, easily over 100 mm, the kind that ricochets several meters off the rooftops.

Thankfully, no severe wind gusts or large hail to contend with.

Best storm I've witnessed, beating those of last July

Following the local action on lightning maps, it seems like we've been smack between two distinct cells to the west & east. Almost continuous CC for around 40 mins, some fantastic CG from the west cell.

It's still flashing away out there from all sides, looking at the sferics we're not over yet - another downpour has started as I type - frequency of lightning is increasing again & we're back to some good bangs after a silent light show for a while.

Ramping up all around, I just wish my partner would stop singing the Thunder Buddy song from Ted to the dog.

Well after our starters it looks as though the main course is arriving in a finger from the south. More frequent flashes now and awaiting the deluge! The BBC lunchtime forecast was pretty accurate, they were talking about potentially half a month's rainfall in half an hour, Yikes!

Hmmm that finger seems to have faded on my mobile, but rain picking up. The main body still seems to be tracking north though, I wonder if it will maintain its energy?
