Folkestone / Lydd / Ashford seem to be getting pasted at the moment, with an active band scattering lightning strikes west along the Sussex & Kent borer as far west as South East Surrey and Gatwick. Should be here in Reigate in the next 15mins if it holds together.

The torrential rain cleared, but it's suddenly turned very dark again.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a sky so black at midday in my life!!!!

EDIT: Ian, did you notice how black it went for 5 mins? 100% solar eclipse black, or 10pm black. Could barely see a thing outside at all! I have never quite seen anything quite like it!

Must be a bit hairy on the descent into Gatwick at the moment.

Still dry over here on the planet. Skies just "Thanet grey". Skies to the SW are looking slightly darkey grey than tha plain old vanilla grey we currently have. That's about as close as I'm getting to any action right now

Anyway, eased off here now and no damage yet. Only a few drips from the roof

Drove home from Reigate, torrential rain most of the way, only 9.2mm here at Caterham, a few rumbles of thunder now.

Total forecast failure for here yet again. Saying that a lot lately. Ferguson tweeting that his faith in certain forecast models is at its lowest ebb

I got 16 mm out of this event but I know areas only a few miles from here will have had double the amount, especially as there is flooding in places around the town (torrential rain fallen onto baked hard ground and poor roadside drainage).

It's now brightening up again as I type, but there's still this evening's potential to think about.

NMM model for 12 noon UK time (13:00 French time)

Actual radar for same time:

Pretty appalling performance for 5 hours out. Even at the initiation time the model was nothing like reality.

The stuff in the southwest is rather uncannily accurate, but it totally missed the rain in the southeast. Not a drop on the model!

Nothing special here and more like zonal type moderate rain and whatever happen it won't match what I saw in Chicago, my time of living in Cyprus and 90's storms here.

Now it's gone very black! As Twister said earlier, more ilke 100% eclipse.

Hearing as well, at least 16 incidents in Sussex so far, and my colleagues there already called out by East Sussex Fire and Rescue to a property fire in Hailsham

Skies here now brightening back to dull grey, and the seagulls have shut up again. Next!...
