Popocatepetl has been erupting on and off since 1994 after a dormant period since 1947, and frequently since 2012. Having said that, I agree with recent posts from Maunder and Saint.

Anyway horrible earthquake; 225 people killed so far, including school children by collapsing primary school.

There was in fact an explosion at Popocatepetl today, according to this video;

As I've posted on the Winter thread, Mount Agung in Indonesia set to blow:

I am due to be in Bali a week on Thursday and watching Agung like a hawk. It's a pretty dangerous volcano and infamous for large eruptions.

It looks like there is a significant chance of an eruption in the coming days but sometimes these periods of activity happen then no eruption takes place. If I was pushed I would say that na eruption is more likely than not.

Obviously depends on where on Bali you would be going, but most of the tourist areas seem well away from the "danger zone". I would imagine the real issue would be flights becoming grounded if an eruption were to occur.

Yes we are going to Nusa Dua, which is 78km from Agung. The volcano last erupted in 1963, it actually did not produce much ash at first, it really got going though and became a VE 5 eruption. Therefore our biggest threat is the Ash cloud, ash deposits were recorded up to 1,000 km away and speculation that Denpesar airport would have been mostly closed for a year if the 1963 event was to occur now. The thought of having a few extra days by the pool in Bali is rather appealing, a year could be an issue ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will check out the suits though just in case. Will keep you updated on developments. A lot of people from Perth are in the same boat as Bali is our local holiday resort.

The aviation warning code has been updated to orange today, so itโ€™s still okay but they are obviously a bit concerned about potential impacts from ash associated with an eruption. Seismic activity is still ongoing with a (magmatic?) quake of magnitude 4.2 this morning adding to the growing evidence of a potential eruption.

Well, if you wanted to stop an eruption, a Daily Express shock-horro headline should do the trick

Iโ€™d love to see more data from around the area and I hope for research purposes the data is being collected in large quantities. I think an eruption is very likely but there is still a chance it may come to nothing. The worst scenario is that people get โ€œboredโ€ of the waiting and go back to their homes just before an eruption occurs.

Agung, Bali, has begun belching steam and sulphurous fumes as fissures have been observed at the crater;

Gunung Merapi (Central Java) and Gunung Kelud (East Java) are the ones I keep an eye on in case they start showing signs of life.. They are very dangerous and I have family in the region.

But Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes, so wherever you go you're not too far away from one ! This image looking east through Java towards Bali gives a good idea of how volcanoes have formed the backbone of Indonesia.

They are awesome places to visit and if anyone is ever in the region, the 2 hour drive to the top of the Bromo Caldera in East Java to see the sunrise is an incredible experience...

I wondered what had been happening at Agung (bar the Express trying to make mountains out of molehills)

https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/agung/news/65606/Agung-volcano-Bali-Indonesia-increasing-seismic-activity.html

Still lots of actvity below ground but nothing to show on the surface. A nightmare for authorities who have arranged evacuation - people will think it's all crying wolf, and start moving back (and by Murphy's Law, just in time for Agung to blow!)

Having just come back from Bali, the volcano seemed to be a bit of a taboo subject. We were around 70km away in Nusa Dua, and over there it seems to be life as normal. The only mention at all in the whole trip was the flight out from Perth mentioning Jetstar were watching the mountain very closely in case of eruption.
At least the Indonesian government are now doing updates in English, which means it easier to understand what they are saying. The mountain is still rumbling and if anything the earthquakes have increased. It maybe a matter of months before there is an eruption, a nightmare for authorities.
Bali is such a beautiful place, well worth a trip. Planning to go to Ubud next time which is more central.
