Poor overall, especially compared to what we've been used to!

1 point for at least being a refreshing change to the dross we endured previously.

1 point for the snowfall (2cm!)

1 point for a couple of frosts, but this was disappointing too as there were many cloudy days/nights.

3/10 - Must do better. See me.

1/10 - two clear frosty days (but, come on, this is January) and no snow

Obviously the models are looking sh.ite tonight because a thread about a non-existent cold spell down here keeps getting bumped.

EDIT: And now Mike is posting in the model thread, so I know it's sh.ite for the forseeable without even having to have a look.

What cold spell

Considering it occurred in mid January, the coldest part of the winter allegedly,a pretty lame effort even for these parts of the country.2 air frosts, the only 2 air frosts this winter it was more akin to late Novembers of yesteryear.Nice to feel some sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday though so 2 out of 10. For comparison,Imo February 1986 and December 2010 would both score 10/10 for cold and the longevity of those cold spells.

While it was infinitely superior to the rest of the winter, as a cold spell it was dreadful. Shockingly bad for January. Didn't get to -5C, only two nights as low as -2C, no ice days, only wet snow with no accumulation and it even rained at one point. Didn't even get any good sunsets or sunrises. Therefore can't give it any marks so 0/10.

With Dew on this...us Chichestrians stick together😄 1/10. This one point being earned by 2 gloriously sunny days with a harsh frost in the morning...the temps here rose well above freezing so no ice day...as for snow....no chance! Atleast 50plus years of experience has taught me not to get sucked in....so expectations were well managed on my part if I may say so...!

I'm going to give it a 6/10... But only warrants that due to a good deal of luck on my part. The mark of a decent cold spell for me is whether I can go sledging/build snowmen etc in a winter wonderland, and i got that... But a) it was only just cold enough for snow to settle, b) only 6cm of snow lay... The minimum really for a proper snowy scene and sledging, c) the thaw set in at lunchtime after the overnight snow but it did occur on Sunday so it meant i could enjoy fun with the kids in the morning (they wanted to warm up in the afternoon anyway).... So it scraped in.... A tweak here and there regarding timing and temperature, and it could easily have been a 1 or 2/10.... Good crisp frosts the past few days though!

5/10

5 air frosts but no laying snow. 7 days below average mean. After December at least it's felt like winter albeit only for a short while.

It ticked a few boxes for a wintry spell.

1) Snowfall, some of which lay on the ground for half a day.

2) Harsh frosts, 3 consecutive nights of -5°c or below, -5.8°c being the lowest. 7 frosts in all, 4 x air, 3 x ground.

3) Sunshine and blue skies, although not that cold during daylight hours, around 4 or 5°c.

The major let down was it did not last long enough, but compared to some recent winters, this was an improvement

To get a proper winter period we need an Easterly really, so 5/10 from me.

A 3/4, 2 very light falls of snow, a fair few frost's, so it did look and feel like winter for a few days.

2/10. Not a flake of snow seen though I experienced 2 fairly decent overnight air frosts followed by lovely clear sunny days, but probably only serendipitously by virtue of temporary relocation to a county far from MBY. Nothing really outside of the expected variation of normal winter weather.

For me 1/10 reflecting the number of days that actually felt like a winter's day to me (being yesterday after a nice overnight frost leaving a proper chill in the air all day). Roll on the next cold spell!!

Here on Teesside (at sea level) it was certainly a 1/10. No snow,no real cold, not even sleet and only 1 real frost.

3/10 enough snow for a mini snowman and a bit of fun for the kids, 2 proper cold nights otherwise a lot of expectation with nothing to show.

2/10.

1 point for the -7C start on Wednesday morning and cold day that preceded it,
1 point for the fact we did see some snow, albeit 0.5cm of slush that lasted a couple of hours - so better than Winter 2013/4 but not by much!

There was a cold spell? Must have missed it by blinking as it felt pleasantly mild by day due to the sunshine and lighter winds, which went a long way in shifting the dampness after that wet start to this month. The only giveaway was a frost at night, but then again I haven't got to be dealing with an early morning motorbike commute to a rural hilltop greenhouse in the middle of nowhere, so I guess I'm not quite so exposed to the cold these days.
However, all of this is preferable to the silly wind and rain of two winters ago, and with that to mind, I'll give it 3.5/10 and that's being generous. As a cold spell in it's own right at my own back yard, it's not exactly going to be something I could tell my nephew's children 20 years later.

I think you know my thoughts!

For what was meant to be the coldest spell since 2013 - has been absolutely rubbish!

Only a slight frost, not even a wet flake of snow, no ice days. Only a few minutes of hail when the rain turned heavier last Thursday night but - the temperatures rose in the showers during the night and never fell.

Seasonal temperatures of 6.4c one day (I think Saturday) before rising during the night - when they should have fallen.

There was a chance of disruptive snow" both beginning of week and end and neither materialised.

Absolute crap! 0/10

Was a cooler spell...NOT a cold spell.

Coldest spell since I moved here in November 2013. 8 days below 4 c and several frosts, though slight thanks to all the cloud. Snow lay for 5 days though and on the hills for 8 with 2 ft drifts from about 500ft. Didn't stop you getting around, unlike all the rain wind, fallen trees and flooding over the previous few weeks. In my village 4/10, but on hills nearby 6/10

4/10.
For me it wasn't a cold spell. It was a snow event (6.5cm) which lasted for 24 hours before starting to melt. Then it remained over zero with grey skies and drizzle until Wednesday evening!

Barely a cold spell really but will give it 6/10 as we had two snowfalls 1cms and 8cms and a few frosts and compared to rest of the UK Cumbria did well, locations just 150 feet higher had 7 days with lying snow.
