Thanks. I've been using that site but I thought it was a different one as those options don't display in chrome. But when I just clicked your link in firefox its back to how I knew it! I will use firefox from now on. Thanks again.

Lightning to the SE of Glasgow and NW of Dundee already. I can see the first maturing CuNimb way to my SW towering out of the haze. More towers going up to the S too

I suspect it altocumulonimbus; i.e., the high base cumulonimbus that develop from altocumulus castellanus clouds. As you've said, it's likely due to convergence line from an old weak occlusion advancing from the SW, plus downdrafts from earlier storms over NE France and belgium.

We had clear as day castellanus this morning, but now it's just milky with varying shades of cream & grey.

These have higher cloud bases than normal storms, sometimes over 3000 m. They develop from overheated lower troposphere or a when tongue of hot lower atmosphere drives into cold upper layers, especially at convergence zones. Having said that, ordinary cumulonimbus do co-exist with altocumulonimbus, often leading to MCSs.

I found it in French Wikipedia, which I think makes interesting reading,

For some reason, this medium level storms/altocumulonimbus stuff is very rarely mentioned in the English Internet world; you'll be very lucky to find it on google, and this is all you'll find on English Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altocumulus_castellanus_cloud

Finding myself sandwiched between a drizzly front to the west and storms to my East.

It's rather hazy sunshine but I can make clearly the cumulonimbus clouds to the east.

25.5C and humid.

Edinburgh's storm is dying out now. It was born over the Pentlands where it rumbled away for 90mins before moving East. General cloud now so more storms looking unlikely. We reached 22 C though our warmest day of the year!

Storms breaking out over the southern Pennines, could well be a line of these forming to link up to the ones further north. Whether they retain any oomph as the line slips east later remains to be seen!

Suddenly thundery and started raining here - quite a small cell overhead.
You could see convergence of cooler sea air and hot Vale of York air right above us.
