Agreed! I found the description of “it felt like a giant snake was moving under my house” pretty scary when that “snake” is presumably lava. I think I would be reluctant to wander around the basement?

Had you noticed that an Alert level 3 is currently in place for Ambae in Vanuatu, aka Aoba, with the evacuation of possibly 11,000 people. Much trouble with dust. It is an interesting volcano with 2 crater lakes side by side, Voui and Manaro.
This BTW was James Michiner's Bali Ha'i in South Pacific - only wrongly depicted in almost every way - he never went there.

Perhaps I should be more careful before pronouncing. I've now recalled that Laki in Iceland had a similar mid-ocean fissure eruption in 1783 caused famine in Iceland and crop failures across Europe.

I take it Hawaii has reminded folk that we were warned about an 'active year' for eruptions/earthquakes due to tidal forces in our solar system putting a strain on the crust of our little speck of dust?

Could it be a Deniers dream and we see a number of impacting eruptions and a global pall of ash/dust to send temps spiralling downward?

If so 3 years hence will be an interesting time!!!

Having said that, I think the Moon tidal forces may have added extra energy to the Earth's interior, not so much now, but in the past when it was much closer to Earth. Of course, most of the Earth's internal heat originates from radioactive decay and from primordial heating.

The tidal theory all depends on how active our nearest neighbour is, which is similar in size and composition - Venus.

The solar system and nearby stars to scale. Colour me unconvinced that the tidal forces of the planets have other than a tiny effect on this planet.

What's also mind boggling is the immense distance between our nearby stars and the Sun.

This is my view too, Dev - but your post made me think of Chaos theory and the concept that small, apparently unrelated, events can trigger significant consequences elsewhere. 

Thinking of boggling and "Scale"- my mind boggled when a geological microbiologist told me that the estimated biomass of bacteria within the Earth's rocks exceeds the biomass of biological material on the surface itself. 

No wonder we are so keen to sample the Martian rocks

The BBC says there was a 30,000 ft plum. That's a large piece of fruit!
