Thanks Gavin, enjoyed your account of Winter 78-79. I remember that Winter very well. I was 12 at the time, and still remains the most exciting Winter of my lifetime. In fact that was when I first started keeping a weather diary. Would like to add some extra info that I remember/noted:
September 1978 - Around the middle part of the month, I remember Look North reported that snow had fallen in the Pennines during the day.
October 1978 - Another brief cold blast brought wintry showers to the north sometime in the 3rd week.
December 2nd, 1978 - Eastern Britain had heavy snow during the day from an advancing warm front moving into the cold air. About 5cm fell here.
December 30-31, 1978 - Remember the snow showers being intense and frequent, sunshine quickly followed by a blizzard, then quickly followed by sunshine, this alternating for hours on end. I just love this kind of weather!
February 12-16, 1979 - The peak of the Winter here with prolonged disruptive snowfalls. I remember that the snow turned to freezing rain across parts of the east and southeast around the 17th/18th.
May 1979 - Sleet and snow showers in the first week. There was even a remarkable frontal snow event here on the morning of the 1st in completely calm conditions.
