Storm Lilian brings strong winds to much of the UK today, with gusts of over 70mph possible for a time over high ground in northern England. The bank holiday weekend is looking quite mixed. Heavy rain is likely to affect parts of the south and south east tomorrow morning, but on Sunday and Monday the risk of wet conditions becomes focused on the north west. Issued 20th August 2024
Outbreaks of rain in northern and south eastern England clear this morning. All regions then have sunny spells, but there will be showers in the north west of the UK. However, the key feature of the weather this morning will be the strong winds associated with Storm Lilian, the 12th named one of the season. Gusts of over 70mph are possible over high ground in northern England this morning, but they will be progressively easing through the day.
Temperatures range from 11°C in the far north west to 22°C in the south east and East Anglia. Check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

Tonight begins with showery rain in the north west, but mostly dry conditions in other areas. However, heavy outbreaks of rain will push up from the south west to cover much of southern and central Britain by the morning.
Tomorrow, the rain steadily clears eastwards, with drier conditions returning to East Anglia and the south east by the early afternoon. In other areas there will be a mix of sunny spells and showers, with heavy and more persistent ones in western Scotland. Rather cool and blustery.

The next few days see a change beginning to take place. To begin with there will be a risk of further spells of rain in the north and west. By bank holiday Monday it should be starting to warm up a little in southern and eastern counties. Through Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures climb, and in southern and central regions temperatures could reach 30C.
