A narrow band of rain pushes southwards today with cold Arctic air following into the northern half of the UK. Tomorrow wintry showers could be heavy in Scotland and over the hills significant accumulations of snow are possible. Early next week an area of low pressure pushes eastwards. It brings rain to much of the southern half of the UK, but in northern England, southern Scotland and possibly Northern Ireland there is a risk of snow. (If you would like to browse the website without adverts and access premium features, see below)

Tonight the rain clears southwards to leave clear periods in most of the UK. Showers continue in western coastal counties and Scotland where many of them fall as sleet or snow. In the north a widespread frost develops.

Tomorrow sleet and snow showers in Scotland could give significant accumulations in places, particularly over high ground.Elsewhere it starts dry, but outbreaks of rain quickly push across Northern Ireland. In the afternoon and evening they move southeastwards over Wales and England. Cold, especially in the north.

Rain, sleet and snow on the way

Next week begins on an unsettled note as an area of low pressure tracks eastwards. It is likely to bring outbreaks of rain to much of the southern half of the UK. In northern England, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland there is a risk of snow, and disruptive accumulations are possible in places. They are most likely over high ground such as the Pennines.

The wet weather clears eastwards to leave cold conditions in all areas. Nighttime frosts become widespread and potentially severe in the north. Wintry showers continue, with most of them in northern Britain and north facing coastal counties. By Thursday another disturbance could push in from the west bringing more prolonged spells of rain, sleet and snow. It could track further south than the first one but it is too early to be confident.
