Rain, sleet and snow clearing

Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow in southern and central counties will slowly clear southeastwards through the course of the day. Snow is most likely on the northern and western edges of the precipitation areas, with accumulations possible in places. In parts of the Midlands there have been significant falls of snow overnight.

Areas to the north have sunny spells, but there will be wintry showers in coastal counties. In the northern half of Scotland heavy snow showers bring further substantial accumulations.

Cold or very cold in most of the UK with temperatures ranging from 0°C in northern Scotland to 8°C in south western England. In the south west it will be milder. Check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

Tonight wintry showers continue in coastal counties and northern Scotland, where most of them fall as snow. Elsewhere, clear periods develop and temperatures plummet. A widespread frost develops and it will be sharp or severe in the north.

Tomorrow the cold conditions continue. Much of the UK has a dry and bright day, but wintry showers continue to pepper western coastal counties. In Scotland snow showers become heavy and prolonged at times. A widespread frost quickly returns in the evening.

Possibly very wet and windy weekend

Thursday and Friday will be very cold. A more organized band of wintry showers is likely to move southwards across the northern half of the UK, with significant snow accumulations possible in some areas. A few wintry showers may reach southern counties, but these areas probably stay mostly dry.

Over the weekend a low-pressure system will move in from the Atlantic. It will bring wet and potentially very windy conditions, also the rain could be preceded by a period of snow in the north and east. Milder conditions are expected to return to all areas, but there are signs of another cold snap next week.
