Rain, snow and strong winds

A big change in the weather is taking place today. Heavy outbreaks of rain quickly spread northeastwards, and in northern England and Scotland they will be preceded by a period of snow. There will be disruptive accumulations in places, with the worst conditions over high ground. This afternoon the persistent rain pulls away eastwards to leave damp conditions, but in southern and central areas further heavy bursts of rain push eastwards.

The other features of the weather today will be the strong winds and temperatures. The windiest conditions are expected to be in southern and coastal counties where gusts of around 70mph are possible. It will be turning much milder than recently. Temperatures this afternoon range from 6°C in northern Scotland to an exceptional 16°C in the south west. Check the weather radar for the most up to date view.
