BBC (Carol K) starting to drop hints of more significant snow later in the week and the charts back this up.

No mention in the Express today Neil. However, they did focus on the Washington snowstorm and contrasted it with the lack of snow at the winter olympic site where they have had a record warm January apparantly.

Signs of increased activity in Sainsburys though. One member of staff says that they are expecting further panic buying as this week progressesoClown

I know this isn't the MO discussion but do you not think things look to be easing in terms snow potential for the end of the week? It appears as the heavier PPN comes in over the weekend temps would make it a very marginal thing?

Hi Jason. I think the prospects of at least 10cm of lying snow by a week today are looking good for some favoured spots in the eastern half of the UK but I think much depends on what happens for the 48 hour period from Wednesday morning. From the GFS it looks like dps will be around freezing for the weekend but these will be lower if we get some lying snow in before Friday. 2m temps will also be modified downwards if we have lying snow before Friday. So plenty of interest in the coming days before the weekend arrives. Meto in their forecast are bullish about significant accumulations by the end of the week but in my opinion these will not be as significant or as widespread as in January. This morning we have had some heavy bursts of proper snow but nothing has laid as temps are just a little too high. Come Wednesday it should be a lot colder so there's hope yet. 'oWink'

UK Outlook for Saturday 13 Feb 2010 to Monday 22 Feb 2010:

Saturday and Sunday will be cold generally, with brisk northeasterly winds, and with wintry showers across some eastern areas, and still with the risk of significant snow accumulations in the far southeast. Overnight frost will be widespread, and locally severe. In the period Monday to Wednesday (15th to 17th) northern parts of the U.K. are likely to become more unsettled, with rain or sleet turning to snow over many inland parts, especially higher ground. Southern areas may also have some snow for a time before mostly turning to rain. Beyond this an unsettled but mostly cold type of weather looks most likely, with a continuing risk of sleet or snow, except perhaps in the southwest where somewhat milder conditions should prevail.

Just followed the link and, as usual, the headline is a little misleading.  The warnings are only for the extreme east of the area.

So, their data shows the same general pattern, i.e. retrogressing high allowing low pressure to move in from the north, with some less cold air moving down in the flow for a time.   Interestingly their update doesn't seem to suggest the trough establishing to the west, otherwise there wouldn't be the comment about continuing risk of sleet or snow.  The description would seem to fit a cyclonic northerly/northwesterly flow?

I think the MetO are spot on its looking no where near as dramatic as in Jan The SE looks to be the favoured spot if any are to see accumulating snow later in the week

oQuestion It agrees very well with the UKMO forecast.  Joe refers to London and the southeastern parts of England.  That looks like a decent call based on the current output - at this range +/- 50 miles is immaterial in forecast terms but could mean nothing except for eastern Kent or snow for East Anglia, the Home Counties and areas as far west as the Isle of Wight.  We simply won't know this for a while yet.
