TWO Storm Chase USA: May 3rd-12th 2008 Reports

So the waiting is over and Ben, Sam and I are off to Dallas in the morning to hunt tornado. The latest convective outlooks look promising with some lively activity likely from Monday onwards.

We will use this thread to report 'live' from the field whenever anything interesting happens, and also post a selection of photos. We will also be hoping to meet a few people - Stu Robinson, Paul Sherman and non other than Michael Fish are already out there.

Also you might like to have a look at our blogs which may contain more info and at least one daily video report

    www.supercellsam.blogspot.com

    www.benstormchase.blogspot.com

So that's it for now. If you have any information we might find useful please post here.

TWO Stormchase team reporting live form Lewisville, Texas. Currently 22C and sunny. Pretty much trouble free trip apart from a 90min wait on the plane at Heathrow. Dodge Caravan more than adequate (if a little erratically drivem by me).

Will study charts and prognostics later and decide on our direction for the morning.

Very competent driving if you ask me Neil...Its was the GPS's fault...

Some marginal stuff around tomorrow, but main action looks like being into OK and KS, with possible organised severe event to follow...

    Yep - we're here!

The combination of jetlag and those fantastic Icedbeers in that mexican joint last night have woken me up with a stonking headache, but never mind. We're all surfacing right now, ready for some breakfast in a while then a quick forecast session - looks like a positioning day somewhere around the TX/OK panhandle ready for tomorrow, but we'll examine in a while ...

Yeah - the SUV's more than adequate - GPS and Internet are working, if a bit troublesome on Neils laptop ritght now, but we'll get that sorted -

    Game on Cool

Just arrived at the Big Texan inn and motel just outside Amarillo, TX. After battling with the wifi I have managed to connect via the hotels network. Driven 317 miles. Hot wind from the south and hoping for some elevate storms later.

Re: TWO Storm Chase USA: May 3rd-12th 2008 Reports

Wow what a day! We were sitting off the road at Richfield, KA waiting for a big cell to start firing when we heard an explosive cell was throwing down 1.25" hail about 40 miles to our north. As we were heading off to intercept the closer cell started to explode itself so we backtracked and waited on a side road for things to happen. It was putting down spiky CGs and although it didn't have too much structure we suddenly noticed a spin-up in a field about a mile from where we are and no sooner had we shouted a few expletives a decent looking tube dropped down. Rather hurredly we re-positioned a few mles further south and again the dust and gravel just over the road started to churn. We legged it once again south and decided to make our way east back towards Guymon, OK. As I type this it's still sparking away nicely outside and this thing isn't over by a long chalk.

All in all an amazing first proper chase day and what, we wonder, will happen tomorrow.

Hearty congratulations Niel and co! Was it a true mesocyclonic tornado? Can't wait to see pics.

Where is your target tomorrow? Mine is Altus, OK, possibly going further west than Childress, TX depending on what happens. Do you have a distinctive chase vehicle? If we're on the same storm and I see it, I'll pop over and say hi!
