    September Global climate

I'm bored of August now (it was neither rapid renewed warming nor iceagenow), so am starting a September thread just 2/3 of the way through the month. What have those daily satellite readings that I can't get to work on my computer been showing? Has this been a month of excited chatter on the "blogosphere"?

My visual assessment from those wxmaps charts through the month is that Europe's been average to cool overall (cold west offsetting warm East), North America has been warm, South America (which always looks cool on those charts for some reason) probably slightly warmer than normal, Africa warm, South Asia cool, Siberia mixed but generally cooler than August, and the oceans - based on the La Nina weekly updates - roughly the same overall as last month.

No reports heard yet, a little early, plus all eyes have been on the sun this month.

Yes, I am hoping for a postive feedback of cooling leading to a massive and stable Siberian block developing during October which persists thru to March. oCooloSmile

The downside of this is that we may get weeks of stalling lows over western Europe giving lots of mild and wet south-westerlies but I can bear such muck if we get some cold easterlies during the winter. oBig Smile

Can't we have a nice Bartlett high and a warm, dry and sunny winter? I suspect 95% of the non-TWO population would vote for that. Admittedly a frigid Siberian anticyclonic winter would be better than 3 months of Atlantic drizzle.

I think that some people with 'mature' computers can't get java to work on this graph but basically it shows that temperatures so far this September have been similar too or slightly higher than September 2007 at 1 km altitude. Not sure what to make of the 'average' line it looks wrong to me.

Yes, I have a 'mature computer' so can't view it unless posted as a picture on here. I think the average line is out of synch - too far left or right, can't remember which.

Sept 2007 was +0.2C in the UAH LT series so that would imply similar (with the caveat that the chart isn't the full lower trop). I'd be surprised if we got such a big jump especially on UAH, which has the lowest trend rate, but we'll see. That would be getting us back almost to pre-La Nina values, again surprising given the persistence of Nina traits in the atmosphere.

I think 95% is a vast over estimate - but I know of no polls which have been conducted on this topic. Just anecdotally, from talking to friends and relatives I would put the split at 60-40 in favour of mild winters.

    Ws,

I contradict, I have 2 work desktops, a laptop and a desktop at home  that is 6 years old. They all have the same software but I can view these graphs on every computer except my home desktop but I can view then with my laptop using my wireless broadband at home. So solve that one oBlack EyeoBig Smile

Well. I even learnt something today! My Vista PC had Java v1.xx, and when I went to this site I realised they were up to Version 7! So mine must have been well out of date. Usually updating to the latest release will solve these odd problems. You may have accidentally 'blocked' Java in your IE settings also. Reinstalling should also unblock it.

So, my first piece of advise would be go to the link above, they have an online 'checker' which will tell you if you're out of date, and offer you the best one for your configuration. You'd need to do it for each of your machines.

Thanks, I'll give it a try on my home machine, the one that can't view the graphs, later

Downloaded Java, seems to do something but still can't view the graph. Still, so long as Waterspout keeps posting the pictures I'll be OK.
