Massive queues for masks in highly developed and affluent South Korea. Beautiful illustration of what fake news and panic leads to. By travelling to shops and standing in queues the people are more likely to contract the virus than if they had stayed at home. Given that masks are believed to offer no protection against the virus the behavioural stupidity level is multiplied. That's why it is best to stick to guidance provided by WHO and governments rather than random (however well written they may be) Internet blogs.

For the record I haven't got any masks. They are far more useful for healthcare workers and people who actually have COVID-19. The N95 masks, to my knowledge, are designed to protect the environment from the individual not vice versa.

The mask will also cause moisture to build up over your face so if there is any leakage it may increase the risk of you getting it.

It's just annoying that you choose this stick to beat me with when I mentioned it as an example of what not to do. I've never once claimed the mortality rate was anything like that high.

If a TWO member catches it will the entire forum have to go into lockdown?

The real issue is not the headline death rate (apart from for those who do die and their relatives), the problem is the number of infected people who need hospital treatment, even though most subsequently recover. Health systems in most countries find it hard to cope, all non-urgent health treatments end up being suspended and hospitals themselves become epicentres of infection.

As I said, if Covid-19 becomes established then the only route to managing it will be via a vaccine for vulnerable groups.

I still think there's a decent chance of this being contained in Italy and South Korea but I've no idea about other countries and if it gets to Africa it certainly won't be contained in most countries.

I think it was Saint who had said it, but sometimes it does feel like some people might be secretly disappointed if we don't get a proper pandemic. It must be a combination of subconsciously wanting to see dramatic news or worst case scenarios developing (because they had read all about them) or just an aspect of the human condition i guess.

Serious question for Quantum if you are around! What do you think about coach drivers not being given protective clothing when they drive repatriated Brits to confinement? There's a pic here:

Italy is considering a mortgage amnesty in the affected area. I'm freelance so if it kicks off here and travel is restricted in London I won't be able to work or pay my mortgage . So hopefully it's a scheme we can have here.
