There is no doubt this is far more widespread than is being reported.

My brother returned from Austria 10 days ago and has all the main symptoms. He phoned 111 and they asked if he has been in contact with a known sufferer. His answer at the time was no so they said no need to test.

Today they have shut down après ski in the resort he was at due to cases there.

The people he went with now have the sympoms and 111 still saying no test needed....

Because the NHS either cannot cope with increasing the numbers of tests carried out, doesn't have the budget for the hundreds of thousands of tests required, or is being instructed to keep tests to an absolute minimum.

This IMO is a national scandal and heads should roll.

60-70% will get the virus - Merkel

German chancellor Angela Merkel has been speaking and says experts believe 60-70% of the population will be infected. But she says countries in Europe should not isolate each other.

Hancock statement tonight at 7pm.
Sounds like timed for maximum impact - I reckon containment measures will be announced.

Which is more or less the same 'worst case' assumption given by the CMO here, which was "up to 80%". It's an absolute worst case scenario based on epidemiological modelling of a novel virus for which there is no herd immunity.

Well, family groups including elderly relatives is thought to have caused the high mortality rate in northern Italy. No solution is without consequences.

Some government spokesperson earlier on said that from today there is now capacity for 20,000 tests per day. They've only tested about 27,000 in this whole outbreak so far. Let's see that extra capacity being used.

The rush to leave northern Italy when the quarantine was extended is a perfect example of self-interest and disregard for others, with people carrying the infection with them as they fled the area.

It is all about timing because if a lot of people think it's a big fuss over nothing then the measures will not be as effective. I've had a number of conversations like that in the last week or so, along the lines of "it's just another virus" and "what's all the fuss about?".  When I've mentioned that your elderly grandparents have a one in seven chance of being killed by it you see a moment of realisation dawning.

I'll be f***ing livid if they close all schools. My eldest is sitting her GCSE's in May/June and I don't want anything to disrupt her chances. These results will stay with her for life.

Here's the Guardian's take on it:

"Angela Merkel has said 60-70% of Germany’s population will be infected with Covid-19, unless measures can be found to slow down the spread and develop vaccines in the time won."

...

“We know that we are dealing with a pandemic virus that will infect 60-70% of people”, said Lothar Wieler, head of Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany’s federal agency for disease prevention, at the same press conference.
