The joys of dealing with an “unseen enemy”. What would be interesting to see is just how high the risk of transmission is from surfaces when traces of the virus are found. I suspect it is not quite as simple as, traces of virus on surface = high risk of infection. If that were the case then the infection rate would be absolutely astronomical as there will always be a surface that gets overlooked.

I suspect that common sense and effective hygiene will prevent most spread and excessive constant disinfection may improve the efficacy of the measures by only another tiny fraction.

I haven’t seen anywhere that suggests 72hrs for surface kill. 
Cardboard and paper a few hours, hard surface like plastic 48hrs.


There has to be a cap on the precautions otherwise it starts getting a bit crazy - in my opinion of course. I can understand if many people take extra care.

This happens in all countries regardless of how well the leader is doing. The rating of the Italian PM have shot up from 44% to >70% despite the carnage.


It's classic mass psychology, at times of national emergencies and existential threats, people rally behind their leaders and feel like they have to trust them.

Extending to June may halt the virus until the next wave, but what lasting damage to the economy? 


We are heading for a 30s style depression inspite of all the money being thrown around and many more will die from this than the virus

the Aussie government are talking about hibernating the economy for 6 months. No utility bills, no mortgages, no rental payments and hopefully shut the stock market as well.


So far from them there has been much talk and not much action, but the mass lays offs are now causing 500m lines outside Centrelink (job centres in the UK).


on a personal note on the positive side our local brewery is still making beer and doing deliveries, so self isolation with the kids is bearable. A new double dry hopped IPA Oat Cream.

IMO, you can drive yourself round the bend worrying about who or what might have touched a surface. You can't disinfect everything.

One of the most distressing sights of the last few days has been the discarded disposable gloves appearing on roads and pavements. One of the local FB groups had pictures of people throwing them out of car windows in a town centre. In reality, protection is only as good as the weakest link in the chain and what are we to do with millions of used gloves anyway?

If I go shopping, I take anti-bac wipes with me and wipe down basket and trolley handles. I clean my hands before I go in store to prevent me from contaminating anything in there. Other people are less careful and I don't see how one could eliminate all chances of cross contamination.

Soap is your friend. Wash before and after handling stuff - especially food.

It's important that companies making and delivering the essentials (food, fuel, cleaning equipment, medicene etc) continue to operate as best they can. You also need some elements of banking, as well as (obviously) the public sector to keep going - even though schools, for example, are closed for most, the teachers at mine at least are still delivering lessons via Google - and we IT staff are still keeping things ticking over, albeit from home.

Morning everyone, apologies first for the rather attention seeking post in the early hours of Saturday morning. Very unlike me.

By way of an update, my mother was sent home as the beds were required at Epsom hospital for Coronavirus cases. I understand across Surrey some 13,000 beds are being made available through different methods including sending some patients home.

Clearly they do not feel she has covid19 but she is still unwell and meningitis has been mentioned. A weird place indeed when this is the lesser of two evils!

With regards work, well I’m not the only one. I can enjoy the children and family life more so for the next three months than I ever thought possible and am pretty certain I’ll have a job to go back to after. Being paid to spend time with my family shouldn’t really be an issue!!! It’s just the shock initially.

Thanks to those who DM’d me also. Very much appreciated.

If I can't get a haircut in the next three weeks, I'm going to just go #3 all over (usual cut for me in the summer).
