I can understand his plight as he obviously has little else in his life and his one pleasure is being denied him.  What he needs to understand is that he’s not alone in this and he’s by no means the worst off.  Everyone is giving up ‘normal life’ to try and stop this thing spreading too quickly and we’re not all moaning constantly!

When the government starts recording people who died of Covid-19, rather than merging them with those who died from a Covid-19-induced "fast forward", we'll have a clearer picture.

I really don’t see why. I am loving having an excuse not to have to go out. Maybe in another couple of months I might be fed up with it but right now I don’t feel I am missing out on anything. I’m finally managing to get the garden under control, for a start!


Then there’s the garage and shed to clear out, two rooms to redecorate, pictures and shelves to put up. All stuff that never gets done in the normal course of things. This lockdown can last the rest of the summer as far as I’m concerned: I might finally get to the bottom of my to-do list!

I've  been cracking into my IT cupboard today.   I haven't had a full sized PC for 10 years but I still have  full sized IDE disks and expansion cards - even full length PCI cards !  It  must be 20 years since I've had a PC that would take those !

We have a habit of keeping things 'just in case they might be useful' and then years later they haven't been touched and you've forgotten what they were for..... power supplies, miscellaneous bits of cable. I just watched the Sky News report from Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy at about 13:30. It's absolutely heartbreaking what they are dealing with. Their health system is stretched beyond its limits, entire ICU departments losing all their patients in one night, coffins being stacked in the streets because there's no room left in mortuaries or chapels and people walking round devastated by losing in some cases, several family members.


This is what we are in for unless the selfish start taking this seriously!

So, you do want to continue this argument.


 


Let's just focus on the facts:



  1. The virus was out beyond China in December.

  2. To prevent it reaching the UK you would have needed to close our borders completely by Christmas

  3. Closing the borders would have locked out hundreds of thousands of British people who were out of the country. As that is never going to happen then you would be looking at quarantining every British person returning; not 'self-isolation' but proper quarantine measures, as were applied to those returning from Wuhan. Anything else wouldn't risk further spread.

  4. Given that (2) and (3) were 100% impossible then the virus was always going to reach the UK.

  5. If the virus was always going to get here then we're just talking about the rate of transmission because imposing restrictions on people back in January was also 100% impossible.


So, your 'headless chicken' panic mode was worse than my alleged complacency.


Feel free to continue the argument if you really must. Preferably just move on - and cut out the name calling.

Exactly!  I haven't had this much time off work and relaxing in decades.   And no guilt!    All the jobs I've failed to do in years finally getting done.  But if I don't do them today or tomorrow it doesn't matter because there are weeks still to go.

I feel for those who cannot go five minutes without relating their life history to a stranger, but avoiding such people for 2 weeks has been the best de-stressing I have had since I spend 3 months alone in the hills  

Just need that Govt money to come through .....

Plus, see my list above - look at the list of misinformation that flowed out of China in January and resulted in the wrong policy decisions being taken. There were still claims back then that it was not easily transmissible.
