I believe it was 42k to April 24th and 52k as of yesterday. The point still stands though

Apparantely the UK is ahead of Italy when it comes to releasing the full death stats. UK total deaths represents mortality where COVID was involved up until Mid April. Italy has only covered March. There are suggestions by ONS, and yes they will obviously blow their own horn, that we are ahead of other European countries when it comes to the stats.

I'd also add we are the most densley populated 'large' country in Europe so a high death toll is not that suprising.

While mistakes have been made its far too early to claim we are the worst in Europe. In particular I find it hard to understand how we could be given that our health service has not been overwhelmed as it has been across Europe (particularly Lombardy).

2023/2024 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):
29/11 (-6), 30/11 (-6), 02/12 (-5), 03/12 (-5), 04/12 (-3), 16/01 (-3), 18/01 (-8), 08/02 (-5)

Total: 8 days with snow/sleet falling.

2022/2023 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

18/12 (-1), 06/03 (-6), 08/03 (-8), 09/03 (-6), 10/03 (-8), 11/03 (-5), 14/03 (-6)

Total: 7 days with snow/sleet falling.

2021/2022 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

26/11 (-5), 27/11 (-7), 28/11 (-6), 02/12 (-6), 06/01 (-5), 07/01 (-6), 06/02 (-5), 19/02 (-5), 24/02 (-7), 30/03 (-7), 31/03 (-8), 01/04 (-8)
Total: 12 days with snow/sleet falling.

Excess deaths at 52,000 up to April 24. The death toll in the UK will eventually be north of 100,000. I have no idea whether that will be the highest in Europe but it is pretty clear it will be near the top of the table.

Will the Sunday briefing give details of how the lockdown will be reduced + how long the current lockdown will go on for until the next review or will it just be the former?

At least it will be mild!

I put the same countries on my favourite graph of population adjusted deaths.

We're top of the shop on deaths but supposedly doing OK on cases?

I wish Russia would let 'their little secret' out of the bag as to why they have such a low death rate compared to cases.
Today's new cases 10,559
New deaths 86

One would say they are being a bit 'economical' with the truth on reporting deaths. Or perhaps the way they process deaths on the books takes 1-2 months perhaps!

Remember those images a few weeks back of ambulances in jams queueing for 9 hours just to admit patients. That's when the new cases figure was much lower around 4k.

Ministers going down with the virus like flies, over 100 doctors and nurses dying with some influential ones also managing to fall out of windows.

Just waiting for a massive story to be leaked by someone over there just how really bad it is, and the cover up.

FWIW I don't disagree with you in any way John; I guess I was trying to be too diplomatic when I described it as an error of judgement.

What I think we can agree on for sure is that both Ferguson and Calderwood acted very irresponsibly, to put it mildly, when they failed to adhere to the same lockdown rules that they were both instrumental in helping the UK and Scottish governments to put in place in March. That's what cost Calderwood her job as CMO for Scotland a few weeks back.

I've ranted quite alot about journalists over the last few weeks with poor quality, shock style gotcha content. However I want to recommend this from Sky news.

This is an excellent analysis of the UK death toll for COVID 19. This is the sort of thing that I would like to see much more of. Dispassionate, informative yet also easy to understand analysis.

Please watch this video, explains why the UK may have an inflated death toll relative to other European countries.

The problem is that tech company monopolies mean independent journalism has been stifiled in the digital age.

If I was going to rectify the situation I would not increase regulation on the media but I would break up tech firms like Twitter, Google, Facebook e.c.t. who, control the market, and use deboosting algorithms to control content (like publishers).

He seemed to have an agenda using words like "some people are fixated on us having a higher death rate than Italy" I agree that excess deaths is a good measure but again until all the data is in the picture will not be clear.

Trevor Bedford with a measured look at this. Seems to be a case of 'we're not sure but needs monitoring'. Not more deadly btw but more transmissible.
