Doubts over the US vaccine. Should add that the ludicrous article undermining the great results in monkeys of the Oxford vaccine had links with someone connected with the US vaccine. The politics of research and funding...

Boris reminds me of a WW1 general, sending out his ministers to be mown down by the ranks of machine guns from the press while he stays in a dug-out, sorry, comfortable hotel, well back from the front line.

Or do you prefer the Duke of Plaza Toro "He led his army from behind / he found it less exciting" (G & S)

As soon as possible? I hadn’t realised they had said that? Is this in addition to Peter English’s comments?

“The BMA wants schools to reopen as soon as it is safe to do so and the evidence allows – this could be before June 1 or after.”. (Note as soon as it is safe and the evidence allows. Very different to ASAP).

As some of us suggested last week the new slogan wouldn't last:

The Government has begun using a new slogan in its coronavirus response following criticism that its "Stay Alert" message was too vague.

It is advising the public to "Keep our distance, wash our hands, think of others and play our part. All together".

Regarding schools, this argument seems convincing to me. I struggle to see how anyone could argue against this.

I am not sure if this is true or not, but apparently Serco have been issued the contract to support contract tracing.

In fact, where has this story about the BMA dropping their opposition to schools opening even come from? Their chair was on GMB just this morning stating that infections remain too high for them to open.

One further question to present this morning.

Sir Captain Tom Moore should absolutely be recognised for his wonderful efforts. I applaud the man I really do.

However do the government usually announce such things at this time of year? It seems like a good diversion to me.

Anyone following the cyclone approaching India and Bangladesh? I've not noticed any comments elsewhere.
Reason for posting it here is the possible impact on Covid-19 control measures. See:

Mods - please move if I've missed correct thread.

Nice summary of where we are now.
https://thecritic.co.uk/were-all-in-the-big-numbers-now/

I liked:
For now: we’re bamboozled with daily changes to the semi-mystical R number (cognoscenti have moved onto Z-scores), but dig below the surface and it’s clear that transmission is now mostly within care homes and hospitals (up to 20% of infections are now nosocomial), and even there it is in rapid retreat.  So why on earth is civil society still locked down?
