Yes 1976 has to be the winner based on sheer duration. 18 days on the trot above 30C and 15 consecutive days above 32.2 (90F).

I doubt if that will be bettered for a very long time, warming climate or not.

Just looked at the Met forecast for Heathrow. 37C three days on the trot from tomorrow?! Surely an unprecedented forecast.

If you switch to Fahrenheit it displays 98, 99, 99, so tomorrow slightly cooler ;)

MetOffice have updated for Heathrow and now 37C on Mon, Tues and Wednesday.

This modification will stop on Tue and Wed, so then yes.

Into the 28s now almost guaranteed that today will be hotter than yesterday.

GFS shows the lower layer modification vanishing this afternoon, FWIW, as heating overrides it.

(Forecast soundings from GFS - compare T+3 with T+12, for example, you can see the low-level modification vanishes during the afternoon. It returns overnight but again is mixed out by the afternoon).

We saw this on Thursday and Friday 7th and 8th Aug 2003. I remember a max temp in London at around 1pm of 22C, then a rapid heat up after the North Sea layer mixed out ending up above 30C.

Many of us on here were saying they had gone too high, and so it turned out.

Herstmonceux was the leader of the official stations at 11am again.

Beautiful day here with warm sun but a cooling northerly breeze. Hard to reconcile with the 30C+ forecasts, let alone 35C+ for just up the road.

Midday temp here is 22.9C while 19 miles away at Heathrow it is 26.9! Herstmonceux up to 27.2.

Compare Dover with London. Dover has a marked "nose" even at 15z today, showing the modificatoin of the boundary layer.

London doesn't. London did, however, have a "nose" at 9z and by 12z it was being straightened out. By 15z it's gone - the modification is overriden by mid-late afternoon, in other words.

The "nose" reappears for London tonight, but straightens out a bit earlier tomorrow - less modification to be gotten rid of.

Even Dover loses most of its "nose" during the afternoon tomorrow.

("nose" of course referring to colder lower layers, with warmer layers higher up).

And the 0z one is here:

There was quite an inversion (the "nose" in my previous post) at 0z, I suspect that'll have mostly gone on the 12z.

When it comes down to it, nobody nose for sure what the UK max temp will be today, but there’s plenty of reason to expect some big climbs this afternoon, as far east as London 😉.

Yesterday’s underestimation of temps was more to do with far more cloud than predicted. Would have easily made 36.
Tomorrow, and even more so Tuesday. will see potential for higher values - cloud permitting.

I have had a go at listing all the days where 35C has been reached in the UK. I am sure there may be one or two missing but hopefully it is fairly comprehensive. So far I have identified 35 days. If anyone has any thoughts on additional days to add to the list please let me know.

29C at Langdon bay now. That’s usually relatively cool compared with nearby Manston, so shows the impact of the NE wind direction.

There’s some hot stuff just across the channel. 36C in multiple sites in Northern France. Need that wind direction to shift a tad.

Arôme now suggesting 34C max today, only a couple of small boobs of 35C. But it has eased off the Monday cloud fest in its 06z and now modelling 33C in London tomorrow. All eyes on convective kick off over France this evening.
