Just wondering what part of the island has this affected - quite a nasty jolt and capable of causing quite a bit of damage and maybe some deaths as well ?

There has just been a magnitude 5.6 (IMO reported magnitude) quake in SW Iceland (about 25km S of Reykjavik). It is in an area that has been quite active this year and has several interlinked volcanic systems. At present I don’t know if it is tectonic or magmatic.


USGS have revised it to magnitude 5.5.


No current sign of any eruption.

A powerful earthquake has struck off Turkey's Aegean coast, north of the Greek island of Samos, officials said.






The 7.0 magnitude tremor, about 17km (11 miles) off the coast of western Izmir province, was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.






There was no word on casualties but images from the Turkish city of Izmir showed buildings that had collapsed.

I stayed in a great hotel near Ozdere 9 years ago, which is south of Izmir and overlooking the bay where the epicentre was. I suspect it could have serious damage.


It's also very close to Ephesus, hope that's not badly affected.

Their vital tourist economy will already have been upskittled by Covid-19 and they are a frequent landing place for migrants too. A 'quake could be a serious matter for them and there are low lying settlements near low beaches that would be vulnerable to a tsunami-like sea surge.

I notice there has just been a magnitude 7.3 (USGS) quake to the NE of New Zealand. Hopefully nothing too serious will come of it but there may be some form of tsunami threat (to the North Island especially).

Edit: the most recent quake has now been revised to 8.1.


To get two magnitude 7ish quakes followed by a magnitude 8 all in a similar regions is quite noteworthy IMO.

Do you remember the situation in Japan in 2011. I remember they had a swarm of earthquakes before the big one that caused the Tsunami.


I wonder if the 8.0 is the big one of whether there is more to come. The whole fault seems to want to give.

There remains an element of uncertainty as to what could happen. Yes the most likely type of eruption will be fluid effusive lava flows rather than explosive, but a powerful eruption can't be ruled out as they have happened in that region in the past. Also effusive lava flows in Iceland have a track record of being on the significant side.
