I don’t know why John Hammond even try’s with these people.

Look at the comments in the thread, more nut jobs who refuse to believe experts and who harp back that good old days.

A lot of these people will carry on like anymore normal day and then probably end up in hospital.

Anyway, until we get onto UK heatwatch in a few days, I am keeping an eye on the Spanish temperatures here: https://www.aemet.es/en/eltiempo/observacion/ultimosdatos?k=esp&w=1&datos=det

41.8C the peak so far today. National record is 47.4.

Met Office have 34°C here for Tuesday. Off of past experiences, you can usually add a degree or two to that, so 35°C maybe even 36°C? Pretty extraordinary for rural Northern England!

A minimum of 23°C for Monday night too!

The COBRA meeting has concluded, warnings at this stage remain unchanged.

They say temperatures are most likely in the mid to high-30s, with a smaller possibility that they could exceed that and possibly hit 40c

The wording matches the text for red, rather than amber.

(The last time this happened was with Eunice - started as amber, but with red wording. Went red at the last minute!)

Weatheronline as always leading the bonkers pack with its 8 day forecast for London. 43C on Monday (33C on Sunday, 37 on Tuesday). Unrealistic sunshine amounts too, 14.4 hours on both days.

Told my mum to be careful on Monday and Tuesday. Nearing 60 and works in a kitchen.

Her response was ‘is it really that big of a deal, it’s only you going on about it’.

This is why a red should already have been issued IMO.

I’ve been battling with people all afternoon, the usually lines

‘1976 was hotter’
‘Its summer’
‘We’ve had heatwaves before’
‘Media Scaremongering’
‘Other countries have heat like this all the time’

People really have no idea and understand how hot 40C and successive days.

They all think it’s like when there on a beach on holiday sipping ice cold cocktails. And I am sorry, it’s seems to always be the same people who refused to wear masks. Sorry if that’s a generalisation. It’s like the GB news crowd.

It was my daughter's school leavers' service this afternoon but they don't break up till next Thursday. I was talking to the teachers and said a Level 4 is all but inevitable and the schools may have to close. They seemed happy enough with the prospect - the kids have been struggling already this week with temperatures barely above 30C here. The primary school is of the classic 1960s flat-roof greenhouse school of design.

So - we have a few days to prepare.

Anyone want to share tips to keep cool on both days (and particularly to get some sleep on Monday night!).

I’ll be keeping all south facing curtains closed (I think it’s also best to keep windows closed as outside temp likely higher than inside).

Isn’t there one about hanging a cold wet towel in front of a fan? Also spraying water on the bed sheets?

Any tips gratefully received (and no, I can’t afford to buy aircons for all the bedrooms at the moment!).

A concern is the red will be issued at the weekend which makes it more difficult for some businessess to make plans. One potential problem is the London Underground. If a tube train without air conditioning gets stuck in a tunnel during the Monday afternoon rush hour the outcome could be awful.
