Claire Nasir from the Met Office has just announced on Channel 5 that Scotland has provisionally had its hottest day on record today with a temperature of 34.8°C at Charterhall here in the Scottish Borders, although that has still to be verified and might not be officially confirmed until tomorrow.

However, that is in line with what we had here in Hawick, so that looks like a perfectly valid record to me.

Charterhall is on the main list of stations which is normally found at weatherobs.com, and is one of the stations which I always refer to as one of the nearest stations to where I am here in Hawick, although I haven't been able to find any data for there recently.

Perhaps, that might be the reason why there might be some doubt in that data and why it needs to be verified.

The last update from the met was at 4pm. I think quite a few of the Lincolnshire area stations could have got higher between 4pm and 5pm, so there could well be some more 40s we haven't yet seen.

Any final result from Doncaster yet? It reported a rounded 40c a couple of times but no clue if it actually breached that figure.

Actually kind of dissapointed. I didn't really expect 42C because of the sparsity of the stations, but I did expect at least one 41C

When I was outside in the shade I went up to 40.5C, I'm quite suprised nowhere has managed to get beyond 40.3C

Basically 40c from London to York . I would say maybe Lincolnshire was probably the hottest spot all other things being equal. Lots of the London ones are in urban areas, the rural contenders are the most impressive.

You had to do a lot to get your 37C indoors. I just had to be at work, leaving the house to itself...

No, just the Botanic Garden, Cambridge NIAB is in the nearby village of Histon and in 2019 measured 0.5C below the Botanic Garden's record of 38.7, so if the same happens again the Botanic Garden would give 40.4C.

If we will see this again in our life time or not long to wait for next time.  Today was the day we attempted to get to 40C after some attempts failed from 2015 onward.

I think the sea breeze screwed us.

The hot land caused winds to become more easterly near the coast, while the front caused westerly winds further west. The result was a convergence zone which not only promoted cloud development but ascent that mixed some of the hotter air out of the boundary layer.

The GFS didn't pick up on this convergence zone, and while the UKV did it was further north in North Yorkshire.

That seems valid and in line with today's maximum temperature in Hawick since that is the nearest station to there.

The temperature has now dropped a bit and although it's still 29°C here as I write, it actually feels quite cool in comparison, and I'm not sweating as much as I was earlier on.

It was bound to be hotter than 32.9 somewhere near the border

Carlisle got up to 34.4 (nd might have been higher in-between the hours) and I know the weather station used there is at the ex-RAF facility in the north of the city only 5-6 miles from Gretna across a flat plain near sea-level as the crow flies, so I reckon Gretna would have recorded the same figure +-1C

Carlisle used to belong to Scotland so we can just claim it directly too

 

Kitchen was the hottest spot as it reached 37.7C to 37.8C from a magnet UK flag thermometer from a souvenir shop in London back in late 80's.

Absolutely surreal to touch stuff or sit down on very warm chairs.   Now cooling down to low 30's and in no time drop it back to high 20's before we sleep comfortable.  Hope the hotel won't charge you high for that.

I think it's mightily impressive for a small island. 40 was always a huge step yet it has been breached and that relates to a warming world.

However i think the huge increases modelled earlier are unlikely. Whilst i don't doubt 42 - 45+C isn't possible with some model runs showing them recently it does take a real aligning of all variables and probably is a 1/1000 year event such as the Canadian heatwave. Even more so in our climate where we are so close to the sea and not large land mass

I thought the weather station was near huntingdon Road and not the farm near Impington/Histon only a mile or so difference anyway

According to the Weather App, Sheffield topped 40 C. Certainly felt very hot but strangely not oppressively so; must be very dry air. Felt strange to have gusty winds, too, it certainly felt like being in Australia.
