As you will all be aware, we have now just entered into the first month of the winter of 2023/24 and also, the final month of 2023 (this year has really flown by yet again, it is astonishing to think about where all of that time goes to (the world of science even has its own theories for that, although such a discussion is beyond the scope of this forum of course)).

So far, this winter has started of on a cold but relatively dry note. What precipitation is falling, is largely in the form of snow in many places, and that can be measured as an equivalent rainfall total although in most cases, you will usually need to wait for that snow to melt before it is actually measured as equivalent rainfall.

Indeed, that may well be the case for quite a while going forward but here in the UK, every winter month will usually always have at least one milder spell within it when everything falls just as rain. At this time of the year, milder weather will usually always mean wetter weather and so, this thread will no doubt become much busier once that happens.

Regardless of how this month pans out though, this is the place to report those all important rainfall totals for this month in your area as they happen.

Thought I'd give this a gentle nudge upwards as we have had our first rain this month, 3.2mm today.

77.8mm to go to reach the 1000 for the year, so eminently possible from current output.

Easily the most rain in a year already since I started recording in 2011 (not that long I know)

Groundwater levels on the rise again. From the EA, 1222 Thu 7th:

Groundwater is high, within a metre of the surface at East Dean, and rising 10cm each day. 15-30mm of rain is forecast Thursday afternoon 07/12/2023. From 09/12/2023 minor groundwater flood impacts are possible, with springs appearing, water flowing on roads, water in basements or under floorboards, and affecting the ability of the sewage network to operate in East Dean, Charlton, Singleton and West Dean. A further 20mm of rain is possible Saturday 09/12/2023. Groundwater is expected to continue rising until 15/12/2023 at Chilgrove and until the New Year at East Dean despite there being only small amounts of rain currently forecast Friday, Sunday and next week.

I have been saying for some time that there appears to be an issue with with SEPA's rain gauges in general because over the last few months at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the rainfall totals from SEPA have been consistently coming out at much less than the rainfall totals from the raw BUFR/SYNOP data for that same station.

Sometimes, these differences are amounting to more than 10 mm per month which means that whereas this year as a whole is going to come out as much drier than average according to SEPA, the totals for that same station according to the raw BUFR/SYNOP data is actually close to the 1991-2020 average and possibly even on course to come out as being slightly wetter than that average and that is also much more in line with the reported totals for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as well.

I know that the data from SEPA is recorded by a different rain gauge to the one which is used to record the raw BUFR/SYNOP data even at the same station, so I would expect to possibly see some subtle differences in those readings as a rsult.

Even with that though, these readings shouldn't be all that much different from each other if they are both taken at the same weather station and so, this tells me that something isn't quite right here.

In order to report this data, I know that I should realy be stucking to the using the raw BUFR/SYNOP data instead of the SEPA data as that is the actual official data as used by the Met Office for their own statistics.

The big issue which I have with that though, is that I would also need to do the same thing with the data for the botanic gardens in order to keep that consistent.

Since the botanic gardens isn't on the list of official stations with a WMO number that starts with 03, I have to rely on weatherobs.com for that data which is often unreliable. A lot of that data tends to be missing as a result and this often means that I don't end up getting up enough data from that in the end, to be able to actually report that in any reliable manner.

At least the Decembers of the 2010s, while lacking in wintry weather tended to be dry. The Decembers of this decade are a whole new level of awful.

86.0mm so just another 3mm to go and it will be wetter than 2015. At that point it will mean every December of the 2020s has been wetter than every December of the 2010s bar 2012 🤢

A staggeringly awful 382.4mm since 6th October. That's such a ridiculous total that it's more than the entire autumn and winter recorded in the following years: 2005/06, 2007/08, 2008/09, 2011/12, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19.

2018/19 had just 288.4mm for the entire autumn/winter and 374.4mm from 1st September to 30th April. A dry spell like that is long overdue but instead it just keeps getting worse and worse.

971mm for the year and 1505mm in the barely 15 months since the start of September 2022. I'm struggling to find any comparatively wet period. The most notoriously wet years of the 20th Century were 1923 and 1924 both of which exceeded the metre at Cranford House. However the wettest 16-month period was just 1442mm for August 1923 to November 1924.

September 1984 to December 1985 had 1488mm at Mannofield. Still less than I've recorded since September 2022 🤢🤮
